Victorian High Ability Program

Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP) in Terms 1, 2 and 3 

 Congratulations to the ten Year 8 students and five Year 7 students who participated in the Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP) during Terms 1 and 2 this year. VHAP is an 8 to 10 week online extension program for high-achieving students in Years 5 to 8 at Victorian government schools. Students are selected based on their NAPLAN results or teacher nominations and participate in extension courses in subjects such as Mathematics and English.

At the end of Term 2, participants shared their experiences and learning with the school community at an assembly. They reflected on the highlights and challenges of the program, and their achievements were recognised with certificates presented by the Principal.

In Mathematics, students extended their understanding of concepts such as the Fibonacci sequence - a pattern in which each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers (e.g. 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55). They also enjoyed exploring mathematical paradoxes and applying their thinking to authentic, real-world situations.

In English, students analysed themes, character development and ideas through texts and film clips, including The Hunger Games and Divergent. They developed their understanding of dystopian and utopian texts while strengthening their skills in planning and writing well-structured analytical responses.

Students valued the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded peers, engage in rich discussions, solve challenging problems, and develop new friendships with students from across Victoria. One student reflected:

"The sessions helped us deepen our understanding of concepts we had learnt previously and extended our knowledge of mathematics by introducing us to new ways of solving problems."
