The Grade 3-6 students have been working on their unit ‘States of Matter’ which will be our focus for the rest of term. 

This past week, the students focused on state changes from liquids to solids and how some liquids can solidify at room temperature. Students also engaged in discussion about how different liquids solidify at different temperatures. 

For the next fortnight, students will be focusing on reversibility of solids and liquids. They will look at how some materials can change from solids to liquids and vice versa. They will also be learning about First Nations’ knowledge of reversibility and how they used it as a part of their daily living. Students will also be engaging in a practical task about melting rates and begin our learning about gases. 

Focus vocabulary for the next fortnight: 

Gas: A substance which does not resist change of shape and will expand indefinitely to fill any container. 

Reversibility: The ability for an object to change its state of matter and change it back again by using heat or cooling. 

Solidify: Changing something’s state from a liquid into a solid.
