Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families, 

It has been a wonderful week of learning in Year 4. Students have been finishing our Storm Boy novel study, developing their mathematical problem-solving skills, and learning to use visual language and symbols in Mathematics to represent and communicate mathematical ideas.

In Religious Education, students are learning about the Eucharist and the parts of the Mass. In Social and Emotional Learning, they are developing their understanding of safety and respectful relationships. In Integrated Studies, students are planning drama performances that communicate a message or perspective.

We are looking forward to celebrating Book Week and sharing our love of reading, books and storytelling!

Year 4 in Term 3:

Religious Education:

In Religious Education, students are learning that the Eucharist is a sacred sacrament and exploring the different parts of the Mass. They are comparing the Eucharist to other celebrations and considering what makes it a special and meaningful celebration for Catholics. Students are developing their understanding of the structure of the Mass and identifying its key parts, including how each part contributes to our celebration of faith and community. 

English:

In English, students are exploring The Arrival by Shaun Tan, developing their understanding of how illustrations can communicate characters, settings, emotions and events without relying on written words. Students are learning to plan and develop a character description using the illustrations as evidence. They are using visual clues to infer a character’s appearance, personality and experiences, and discussing how illustrations help readers understand and connect with the story. 

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students are learning to measure and calculate the perimeter of shapes. They are developing their understanding of how to measure the length of each side accurately and use these measurements to find the total distance around a shape. Students are applying their skills to calculate the perimeter of both regular and irregular shapes. 

Integrated Curriculum:

In Integrated Studies, students are learning how to plan a drama performance that communicates a story, message or perspective. They are working collaboratively to contribute ideas and develop scenes with a clear purpose. Students are making deliberate choices about characters, settings and drama conventions to communicate their ideas effectively and prepare for their performance. 

Auslan:

In Auslan next week, students will explore family, identity and Deaf culture. They will learn and practise signs for different family members and use Auslan to share information about their own families, including who is in their family, their ages and activities they enjoy. Students will also explore how our families, experiences, language and values help shape our identity, while learning about the importance of sign language, shared values and community to Deaf identity.

Social & Emotional Learning:

In Social and Emotional Learning, students are exploring what violence is and the different forms it can take. They are learning to recognise early warning signs in themselves and others and understanding that everyone has the right to feel safe. Students are developing strategies for responding to challenging situations respectfully and exploring how positive choices, respectful communication and appropriate behaviours can help prevent harm and create safe, supportive relationships. 

Important Classroom Reminders:

• Fidget Toys

  We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

• Please ensure that you are labelling all your child's belongings.
