Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families,

We have another exciting week ahead in Year 1, with several special events for our students and families to enjoy. We are looking forward to our Book Week Parade on Monday 24th of August, where students will have the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character and celebrate their love of reading, books and storytelling. Families are welcome to join to watch the parade at 9am.

On Wednesday 26th of August, we will come together for Mass at 9:30am as a school community. This will be a special opportunity for our students to pray, reflect and celebrate together.

Finally, we look forward to celebrating Father’s Day breakfast on the 4th of September and recognising the wonderful fathers and father figures in our children’s lives. We hope this will be a special time for our students and their families to celebrate the important people in their lives.

It is sure to be a busy and joyful week, and we look forward to sharing these special moments with our Year 1 students and families.

Award Winners

The week ahead:

Religious Education: 

Next Wednesday, 26 August, students will attend Mass at St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church from 9:15am to 10:15am. The theme is “Children of the Church.” The Year 1 community will lead the ceremony, with Foundation students attending as special guests. We are excited to hear our students confidently read the passages during the Mass.

Writing:  To celebrate book week next week, we will be reading Dear Broccoli by Jo Dabrowski which was picture book of the year for 2026 ! 

Reading: Students will learn o-e another way to write the  /o¯ / sound. It is called a split digraph. The dash tells us that a consonant grapheme sits between the o and the e. Students will also learn a much less common way to spell /o¯ /  with the letters oe together as it is used at the end of the word. 

Mathematics:  Students will continue working on skip counting fowards and backwards and patterns. We have also been trying to get students to spot errors in answers as shown by the example below.

Integrated Curriculum: Students will learning how First Nations music, song and dance can hold knowledge, stories and traditions.

Social and Emotional Learning:  Next week in Social and Emotional Learning, we will be learning about Child Safety Week. Students will explore important ways to stay safe, recognise safe and unsafe situations, and identify trusted adults they can turn to for help.

Auslan:  We are examining students AUSLAN skills for Unit 6. Students learnt how to ask what to do if they have forgotten a particular sign. 

What you can do at home

• Listen to your child read regularly and encourage them to use their decoding strategies when they come to an unfamiliar word.

• After reading, ask your child to retell what happened, share their favourite part, or explain how a character was feeling.

• Re-reading familiar texts is a great way to build confidence, fluency and expression.

• Notice numbers in everyday places and ask questions like, “How many altogether?” or “How do you know?”

• A curious question to ask this week could be: What traditions does your family, school or community celebrate?

Important Classroom Reminders:

• Fidget Toys

  We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

• Spare clothes/change of clothes

  Please pack spare clothes with a pair of socks and underwear to be placed in the front zip pocket of your child's school bag in case of a toileting accident or when they get muddy during recess and play time. 

• Please ensure that you are labelling all your child's belongings.
