Book Week 2026 – Symphony of Stories
Each year, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) celebrates Book Week, a wonderful opportunity for schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators and children to come together and celebrate the joy and importance of books and reading.
This year, Book Week will be held from 22–28 August, with the 2026 theme 'Symphony of Stories', featuring beautiful artwork by award-winning Australian author and illustrator Briony Stewart. The theme celebrates the way characters, plots, words and music can come together to create magical and memorable storytelling experiences.
During Book Week, the CBCA announces its annual Book of the Year Awards, recognising and promoting outstanding Australian literature for young people. The award categories include:
- CBCA Book of the Year: Older Readers
- CBCA Book of the Year: Younger Readers
- CBCA Book of the Year: Early Childhood
- CBCA Picture Book of the Year

Book Week is also a wonderful reminder for all of us, students, families and staff, to make time for reading amidst the busyness of modern life. Reading provides countless benefits, including improved comprehension and vocabulary, enhanced literacy skills, stronger memory and concentration, and positive impacts on health and wellbeing. It also helps develop the communication, critical thinking and lifelong learning skills that are so important for the future.
Celebrate Book Week in the Library!
To celebrate “Symphony of Stories”, the library will be hosting a range of fun lunchtime activities throughout Book Week, including:
- Name That Soundtrack – Can you identify the book or movie from its music?
- Symphony of Stories Matching Challenge – Match characters, books, authors and musical themes.
- Literary Trivia Wheel – Test your knowledge of books, authors, characters, movies and music.
Students can participate individually or in teams of up to five. There will be plenty of opportunities to earn points, with prizes awarded to the individual and/or team with the highest score.
