Students had a fantastic time exploring nursery rhymes and enthusiastically engaging in a range of creative Puss in Boots craft activities. Through songs, stories and hands-on experiences, students developed their imagination, creativity and oral language skills while building connections with familiar rhymes and characters.

During Education Week, students thoroughly enjoyed welcoming parents and carers into the classroom and sharing their learning experiences. Students loved participating in a collaborative garden design activity, where they created collage designs for the new Prep outdoor learning space. They demonstrated great enthusiasm as they planned and designed colourful and engaging garden spaces for everyone to enjoy.

We were incredibly excited to have the opportunity to participate in the native animals incursion with Wildlife Xposure.

Students were fascinated as they learnt about a variety of Australian animals and had the chance to see them up close. The experience sparked curiosity and excitement, while helping students develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of Australia’s unique wildlife and natural environment.

The Prep Team

Year 1

Can you believe we are already halfway through Term 2? Time is flying in Year 1, and we have been busy with lots of exciting learning experiences across the curriculum.

In Humanities, students have continued exploring the concept of Old and New, investigating how life has changed within our community and school over time. This connected beautifully with Brookside Education Week Open Morning and the theme, “Showcase Your School.”

During the Open Morning, students worked alongside members of our community to draw and write about their favourite parts of Brookside College.

It was wonderful to see students proudly sharing what makes our school special.

In Maths, we have continued our learning about patterns and have moved on to skip counting. Students have enjoyed creating towers with Unifix cubes to represent growing patterns while practising skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. Through hands-on activities, students are developing confidence in recognising number patterns and making connections with the concept of counting

In Reading, students have been learning about the suffixes ‘er’ and ‘est’, as well as trigraphs (when three letters work together to make one sound). We have enjoyed using Decodable Readers Australia to go on sound hunts and continue recognising the digraphs and trigraphs we have been learning in class.

Over the last few weeks in Writing, students have also had lots of fun researching animals and exploring the features of informative reports. Students have been learning how to organise facts, use topic-specific vocabulary and share information clearly in their writing.

This term in Respectful Relationships, students have been learning about the importance of working together as a team and how cooperative behaviours can help when solving problems. Through group activities and discussions, students have been building strategies such as listening to others, taking turns, sharing ideas, and working together respectfully. We have been focusing on developing these skills to help build strong friendships and create a positive and supportive classroom community.

We look forward to continuing to build on these skills throughout the remainder of the term as students grow in confidence, curiosity and independence. Thank you for your continued support at home, we are excited for another fantastic second half of Term 2!

The Year 1 Teachers

Year 2

Welcome to Week 6 in Grade 2!

It has been a wonderful few weeks of learning, growth, and celebration across our classrooms. The students continue to demonstrate enthusiasm and persistence in all learning areas, and we are very proud of their efforts.

In Literacy, students are continuing to build their phonics knowledge by focusing on different sounds and applying these skills in their spelling and handwriting. Recently, students have been exploring the long vowel sound air/are and ‘ch’ as /k/ and ‘ch’ as /sh/. Students are practising recognising these sounds in words and using them confidently in their writing.

As part of our Literacy and Writing lessons, we are transitioning into exploring non-fiction and narrative-style texts. Students are learning how authors structure texts and are beginning to innovate on familiar stories and information texts by adding their own creative ideas and language features.

In Mathematics, we are continuing our work on fractions. Students are learning to identify fractions in a variety of contexts, including shapes and collections. They are developing an understanding of equal parts and using this knowledge to make connections with our new Time unit.
