French

With Josian Pfihl Abuthahir / Helen Genito

On 18 May 2026, 12 students from both the Primary and Secondary sections of Brookside College participated in the Berthe Mouchette French Poetry Recitals Competition, Victoria’s longest-running and most respected French-language event for school students.

This was a memorable experience for our students and a significant milestone for Brookside College, as it was the first time our school had entered the competition. Competing alongside 93 other schools across Victoria provided a unique opportunity for students to strengthen their language skills, build confidence, and celebrate their passion for French, with exciting prizes also on offer.

Students were invited to explore this year’s inspiring theme, Des ponts entre nous (Bridges Between Us): bridges between people and cultures, languages and ideas, and to discover how French itself can become a powerful bridge for expression and connection.

Brookside College was proudly represented by:

  • three Year 4 students, who presented Au Galop (“At a Gallop”) by Philippe Soupault;
  • two Year 6 students, who recited Conversation (L’homme et la terre) (“Conversation – Man and the Earth”) by Jean Tardieu and En sortant de l’école (“On Leaving School”) by Jacques Prévert;
  • and six Year 7 students, who presented Homme de couleur (“Man of Colour”) by Léopold Sédar Senghor.
  •

We warmly congratulate all of our students for their courage in reciting before examiners appointed by the Alliance Française de Melbourne, as well as for their dedication, hard work, and commitment to promoting the vitality of French at Brookside College.

Merci beaucoup et félicitations à tous !
