1/2 A Mainstream

What we have been up to:
We eased back into the term by playing a range of games and activities that rebuilt connection, belonging and engagement in the classroom. It worked a treat because we have had a great start to Term 3! This term we are taking a deep dive into the physical science subject of ‘Light and Sound’ and our Key Questions for our learning are:
- How do we use light and sound to communicate with each other?
- How does light and sound continuously impact what we think, feel and do?
- How is light and sound produced and how does it travel?
Maths:
At the beginning of this term, our numeracy focus has continued to be on addition and subtraction and the links between them. Last term we practised vertical addition and this term we have tried our hand at the trickier vertical subtraction. Students did a great job of using their prior knowledge of how to solve vertical addition to help them understand how to solve vertical subtraction. We also finished the unit with addition and subtraction problem solving and reasoning tasks. Students got the chance to think deeply about a problem and apply their understanding.
Literacy:
We are beginning to work on writing our own narrative texts by learning to unpack other stories that we are reading. When we are reading narrative texts, we look for the story’s setting, characters (especially protagonists and antagonists), problem, and resolution. To encourage your child’s craft of creative writing, you can look for these narrative elements in any stories that you read together at home.
As part of our phonics program, we are finishing up Little Learners Love Literacy Stage 7.3 sounds before moving on to 7.4 . The sounds included: oo as in goose, le as in little, ow as in brown, ou as in couch, oi as in oink, oy as in joy and oo as in oops.
What’s to come in the next two weeks:
We are looking forward to our new unit focus, sound and light. Last term, students had a lot of success investigating our integrated topic outside of the classroom, so we are hoping to keep that spirit going with another take-home task. We are asking for some artefacts - evidence of sound or light - that you might find around the house. Please see Compass for further information.
