Launch of Student Service Awards

As we begin the Student Service Awards Program in Semester 2, we are excited to recognise and celebrate the many ways our students contribute to their school, families, parish and wider community. 

Students are encouraged to log service activities completed both within and beyond the school environment. Service may include involvement in groups such as Vinnies, leadership activities, assisting with school events, helping with House activities, supporting peers, volunteering in the community, participating in organisations such as Army Cadets, coaching or umpiring Junior sport, and age-appropriate service within the family, such as helping with household responsibilities or assisting relatives. 

The program aims to foster a spirit of generosity, leadership, and service to others, while encouraging students to reflect on the positive impact they make in their communities. Please note that activities for which students receive payment are not eligible to be counted as service. 

As the program is commencing in Semester 2, students will have the remainder of this year to accumulate and log their service activities. At the end of the year, students who reach the required service milestones will receive certificates and service badges in recognition of their contribution. 

We encourage parents and caregivers to support the program by discussing service opportunities with their sons and encouraging them to record their service throughout the semester. We look forward to celebrating the many ways our students live out the values of service and community. 

Senior College Sacramental Program 

This week, we are excited to begin our Senior School Sacramental Program, with a group of young men choosing to explore and deepen their faith journey. Through this program, students will prepare to receive the Sacraments of Initiation in partnership with St Bernard’s Parish and our College Chaplain, Fr Suresh.  

We ask our College community to keep these students in your prayers as they take this important step in their faith journey. If there are other Senior College students who may be interested in participating, we encourage families to contact the College for further information. 

Treaty Day Match — Community Invitation 

On Friday, 7 August, St Virgil’s College will host our 6th Annual Treaty Day Football Match, a significant event in our school calendar that brings together students, staff, families and the wider community. 

The match commemorates the anniversary of the meeting between Tasmanian Aboriginal resistance leader Mannalargenna and Colonial representative George Augustus Robinson in 1831. This moment in Tasmania’s history provides an opportunity to reflect on themes of truth-telling, reconciliation, justice and understanding. 

The event will begin with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony on the Main Oval, acknowledging the muwinina people and the palawa pakana peoples of today. This will be followed by the Treaty Day Match, an invitational AFL game between students from Years 9 and 10. Players will wear the St Virgil’s Reconciliation Football Jumpers, designed by students during Reconciliation Week in 2021. 

We warmly invite parents, carers and members of our community to join us for this important occasion and to support the students participating in the match.
