Grade 5 and 6

What? Term 3 is Over!

And just like that, we have reached the end of Term 3! What an incredible term we have had. The Grade 5 and 6 classrooms have truly been thriving, and it has been wonderful to see our students learning, growing and embracing so many opportunities throughout the term. It feels like only yesterday we were kicking off the term with Boys’ Netball Day, the ACPS Athletics Carnival, 100 Days of School, our Grade 5 visit to Warrandyte High School and Parent/Teacher Interviews.

And what a way to finish the term! From Camp and Book Week to District Athletics, Father’s Day, Swimming, Books to Life and Footy Day, the final few weeks have certainly been packed with excitement, learning and plenty of memorable moments. It has been a busy but incredibly rewarding term, and we are so proud of the way our Grade 5 and 6 students have continued to step up, challenge themselves and make the most of every opportunity.

Let's take a look at our learning and Camp adventures.

English - Diving Deep into BlueBack

This term, we have dived into the world of Tim Winton’s Blueback. Students have engaged in shared reading experiences that have supported the development of their fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and deeper understanding of the text. Our reading has been informed by the Science of Reading, with students encouraged to think critically, make connections and justify their ideas using evidence from the novel. Alongside our reading, we have explored writing at both sentence and text level, with students developing persuasive writing connected to the themes, characters and environmental issues explored throughout Blueback. To finish our unit, we watched the film adaptation and had lots of fun comparing the movie with the novel. Students discussed what was similar and different, including the characters, setting, events and themes, and considered why certain choices may have been made when bringing the story from the page to the screen. It has been wonderful to see our students become such thoughtful readers and writers while exploring the important messages about our oceans, the environment and the impact our choices can have on the world around us.

Camp Marysville

The major highlight of this term was Camp Marysville. Our recent Grade 5/6 camp was an outstanding experience and a wonderful opportunity for our students to strengthen our school pillars of Community, Character, Curiosity and Connection.

Camp provided students with opportunities to learn, grow and challenge themselves beyond the classroom. Through shared experiences, teamwork and a range of outdoor activities, students developed a strong sense of community and learned the importance of supporting and encouraging one another. Stepping outside their comfort zones also allowed the students to build character, resilience and independence as they took on new challenges and experiences.

Camp Marysville offered a fantastic range of educational, interactive and fun activities, including canoeing, crate stacking, hut building, archery and bike riding. The bike ride was a particular favourite, while the many team-based activities encouraged students to communicate, problem-solve and work together.

The camp also provided opportunities to connect classroom learning with the local environment and community. Our walk into Marysville and informative bushfire session gave students the opportunity to learn more about the devastating impact bushfires can have on the local environment and community, making this a particularly meaningful part of the experience. Of course, the visit to the local lolly shop was also a definite student highlight!

Most importantly, students returned from camp with new experiences, greater confidence, stronger friendships and plenty of wonderful stories to share. Camp Marysville provided a memorable experience that encouraged our students to challenge themselves, connect with others, explore their surroundings and embrace new opportunities.

District Athletics

A massive congratulations to all of our students who represented the school at the recent District Athletics carnival. Our athletes competed with outstanding sportsmanship, determination, and school pride across all track and field events. It ended up being a wet and rainy day but students gritted their teeth and got to work.

A special shout-out to the 13 students who placed in their events and have qualified to progress through to the Division Athletics Championships! This is an exceptional achievement, and we wish them the absolute best of luck as they represent our school at the next level.

Well done to everyone involved!

Grade 5 Visit to Warrandyte High School

Our Grade 4 and 5 students stepped into the world of secondary school this term with an action-packed morning visit to Warrandyte High School.

The trip was a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience the high school environment firsthand. They dove straight into hands-on learning across a range of engaging subject areas, including:

  • Science: Experimenting in real high school labs and exploring practical concepts.
  • Physical Education: Taking on new sports challenges in high-energy group activities.
  • Cooking: Heading into the food technology rooms to whip up some delicious treats.

A highlight of the morning was seeing plenty of familiar faces, as our students caught up with past Andersons Creek Primary School students who are now thriving at Warrandyte High.

Our Grade 4s and 5s represented our school brilliantly, showing great curiosity, enthusiasm, and exemplary behavior throughout the visit. Well done to everyone involved for making it such a successful and memorable morning!

Last week, we completed our swimming program at Carey Grammar. Students worked hard to develop their swimming skills, water confidence and safety awareness throughout the program.

This week, we enjoyed another wonderful Books to Life experience, with Tony Bones bringing the story Being Indy to life for our students. The highly interactive performance encouraged plenty of student participation and engagement, making the story come alive in a fun and memorable way!

Our Grade 6 students also rolled up their sleeves for what is becoming our annual working bee! Working together, they sorted and spread mulch, tidied the theatre and cleaned our playgrounds. It was fantastic to see students working collaboratively, taking responsibility and contributing to our school environment.

To finish off the term, we celebrated with Footy Day! We were lucky enough to have some footy players join us for a fun-filled day of all things football. There was plenty of excitement, enthusiasm and team spirit throughout the day.

Take a look at some of our happy snaps from these wonderful Grade 5/6 experiences!
