Grade 3 and 4

Term 3 2026
What a wonderful and action-packed Term 3 it has been! Our students have been busy learning, exploring, competing, celebrating and making plenty of special memories along the way. From our exciting excursion to Scienceworks and the teamwork and enthusiasm shown at HoopTime, to the energy of Athletics Day and Footy Day, there has certainly been no shortage of opportunities for our students to get involved and give things a go. Our swimming lessons at Carey Grammar have helped build confidence and important water safety skills, while our special Father’s Day Breakfast was a fantastic opportunity to come together as a school community and celebrate the wonderful special people in our students’ lives.
It has been fantastic to see our students embracing each experience with such enthusiasm, encouraging one another and showing the school values that make our community so special. As we head into Term 4, there is still plenty to look forward to! We are excited for another term of learning, laughter, new experiences and opportunities for our students to shine. We look forward to making the most of the final term together and finishing the year on a high!
Father's Day Breakie
Our Father’s Day Breakfast was a wonderful morning filled with smiles, laughter and connection. It was fantastic to see so many dads, grandfathers and special people join us to share breakfast and spend some quality time with our students. Events like this are a wonderful reminder of the strength of our school community and the importance of coming together to celebrate the special people who support and encourage our students each day. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the morning such a memorable occasion!
Footy Day
Our Footy Day was a fantastic celebration of all things footy! The students had a wonderful time dressing up in their favourite team colours, proudly showing their support, and bringing plenty of team spirit to school.
We were incredibly lucky to have AFL star Bayley Fritsch visit us on the day, who wowed the students by showing off his skills and sharing his experiences. Our students had the opportunity to ask questions, learn more about the game, and, of course, take lots of photos with our special guest!
It was a fun-filled day of football, laughter, and school spirit, and one that our students will certainly remember.
Thank you, Nick Selek, for making that all happen.
Swimming
Our school swimming program at Carey Grammar was an amazing experience for our students! Over the course of the program, students built their confidence in the water, developed important swimming and water safety skills, and had lots of fun along the way. It was fantastic to see students challenging themselves, celebrating their progress and encouraging one another throughout the program. A huge thank you to the staff at Carey Grammar and our wonderful teachers for helping make the program such a positive and memorable experience!
Books To Life
Our students were delighted to take part in the Books to Life incursion, Being Indy, based on the CBCA Notable-listed picture book by Zoe Gaetjens and Estee Sarsfield. The engaging performance brought the story to life through puppetry, costumes, sets, music and digital design, captivating students from beginning to end.
Being Indy provided a wonderful opportunity for students to explore important themes of belonging, inclusion, kindness, courage and being true to yourself. Through Indy’s journey, students were encouraged to think about what it means to feel included, how fear can influence the way people treat others, and the importance of having the courage to stand up for what is right. It was fantastic to see our students so engaged with the story and to hear their thoughtful reflections and discussions following the performance. The incursion was not only entertaining but also provided valuable opportunities for our students to reflect on how we can create a welcoming and inclusive community where everyone feels that they belong.
English
Our English learning has continued to be filled with reading, writing and plenty of imagination! This term, students have been developing their understanding of procedural texts, learning how to sequence events, choose precise vocabulary and present clear, logical instructions. They have been working hard to organise their ideas so that their writing is easy for others to understand and follow.
Meanwhile, our Year 3 and 4 students are still thoroughly enjoying Escape from Mr Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein. We have been reading approximately one chapter each day, and the excitement is certainly building as we get deeper into the story! Students are making predictions, discussing characters and events, exploring new vocabulary and using clues from the text to think about what might happen next. With puzzles, challenges and plenty of surprises along the way, we are reading madly to find out what happens! It has been wonderful to see students so eager to pick up the book each day and share their ideas and predictions with one another.
Mathematics
Our classroom economy continues to be a hive of activity, with our banker and police officer kept very busy! Students regularly check their balances, pay for classroom privileges and fines, and keep a close eye on their spending. Our bankers have been doing a fantastic job managing the classroom accounts, while our police officer has been kept busy ensuring our classroom economy runs fairly and smoothly!
We have also taken our learning about money a step further by exploring percentages and discounts. Students are learning how to calculate discounts and apply percentages to real-life shopping situations, helping them understand how mathematics is used when making purchases and comparing prices. We are also continuing to strengthen our understanding and use of the four operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication and division — which students have been developing throughout the year. It has been wonderful to see students applying these skills together, choosing appropriate strategies and explaining their mathematical thinking when solving problems.
With our classroom economy continuing to grow, there are plenty of opportunities for students to practise their financial and mathematical skills in meaningful and engaging ways. Who knows, we may even have some future bankers, business owners and accountants among us!
