Spring Has Sprung! Thinking About a Summer Job?
For students in the Lakes Entrance area, there are many different local businesses and industries to explore. Opportunities may include:
- Cafés, restaurants and takeaway shops
- Accommodation and holiday parks
- Retail stores and supermarkets
- Tourism, boating and marine businesses
- Local attractions and recreational businesses
- Cleaning and hospitality
- Gardening, landscaping and outdoor work
Warehousing and other local businesses
Students don’t always have to wait for a job to be advertised. Walking into a local business with a resume, introducing yourself and asking if they are hiring can be a great way to practise communication skills and discover potential opportunities.
No Experience? No Problem!
A first job is about much more than earning money. It is an opportunity to develop valuable skills such as communication, teamwork, reliability, customer service, time management and problem-solving.
Students can also draw on experiences they already have. Sport, volunteering, helping at home, school activities, work experience and community involvement can all demonstrate skills and qualities that employers value.
How Can Families Help?
Families can support students by:
- Encouraging them to start exploring opportunities early
- Helping identify local businesses that may be hiring
- Checking local job websites and business social media pages together
- Helping students make sure their resume is up to date
- Practising how to introduce themselves to an employer
Discussing transport options and availability during weekends and school holidays
Taking the first step can feel daunting, but exploring employment opportunities is a great way for young people to build confidence, independence and skills for life after school.
Customer Experience Traineeships with East Gippsland Shire Council
Are you a Year 12 student thinking about what comes next after school? Not sure whether university is the right pathway for you, or considering taking a gap year while gaining valuable work experience?
East Gippsland Shire Council will soon be offering up to three Customer Experience traineeships, commencing in January 2027.
This is a fantastic opportunity for local young people to begin building their career close to home while earning an income and completing a Certificate III in Business.
Over the 12-month traineeship, successful applicants will work within Council’s Customer Experience team and gain exposure to a wide range of Council services and departments, including:
- Customer service
- Libraries
- Finance
- Human Resources
- Information Technology
- Community Laws
- Open Spaces
Roads and infrastructure
The traineeship provides the opportunity to learn from experienced local staff while developing practical workplace skills, confidence and valuable experience that can help shape future career opportunities.
You don’t need previous work experience to apply. Council is looking for young people who are willing to learn, reliable, punctual, open to feedback and ready to commit to full-time work and study for 12 months.
This could be a particularly great pathway for students who are finishing Year 12 and are looking to enter the workforce, explore their career options, or gain qualifications while working.

Expressions of interest close: 25th October 2026
Commencement: January 2027

Rural Chances Vocational Scholarship
Are you planning to undertake a TAFE qualification or apprenticeship in 2027?
Youthrive Victoria’s Rural Chances Scholarships provide $5,000 to support young rural Victorians who may be experiencing financial or social challenges.
The scholarship can assist with costs such as tools and equipment, accommodation or moving expenses, and travel required for training. Recipients also receive mentoring, leadership and networking opportunities.
Applicants must be 16–24 years old, live in rural or regional Victoria, demonstrate financial hardship, and be planning to undertake a Certificate III or above at TAFE or an apprenticeship.
Applications for 2027 close Monday 19th October 2026 at midnight.
Applications can be completed online as either a written or short video application, and one written reference is required.

Education Support Traineeship Opportunities – Expressions of Interest
AGA is currently seeking Expressions of Interest for Trainee Education Support positions in East Gippsland.
This is a great opportunity for Year 12 students and recent school leavers interested in education, youth work, disability support or community services.
Trainees will earn while they learn, gaining practical experience supporting students and teachers while completing a nationally accredited qualification.
The role may involve supporting students with classroom activities and learning tasks, encouraging participation and inclusion, preparing classroom resources, and assisting students with a range of learning needs.
AGA is looking for people who are reliable, patient, positive and interested in working with children and young people.
This could be an excellent gap-year opportunity or a first step towards a future career working with young people.
MEGT Community Connect event in East Gippsland - Apprenticeship & Traineeship opportunities
