From the Assistant Principal, Cocurricular

Many thanks to you all for your efforts throughout Term 4 with the start to the Summer Season.

Whilst NSTA Tennis and ISA competition take a break, district cricket and Pennants Squash continue.  Competition resumes in the ISA on 3 February 2024 with NSTA Tennis still to be confirmed.

Over the break our 1st XI cricketers will head to Brisbane and we wish them well in their endeavours. Thanks should go to the staff who will be giving up holiday time with their families to accompany the team.

Hoping you have a restful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Mr Matt Stearn - Assistant Principal, Cocurricular

Basketball

Round 6 of the ISA basketball season saw most of our teams playing their first or second round opponents for the second time.

All divisions had more wins than losses throughout their age groups, with some close games and a buzzer beater in the 17Es for the win. Congratulations to the 15Cs and 14Es who are now the only teams to be undefeated in the season so far.

The 1st V were again victorious against Redlands in a very exciting and close match. Thank you to all the supporters who came along to support the team and farewell Flynn Pavely in his last game for the blue and gold.

Thank you also to all of the coaches that took extra teams on the weekend to cover a very busy weekend. In particular, thank you to Mr Sean Brannan for his ongoing support of basketball throughout his time at the College. You leave us huge shoes to fill for next year. We wish you all the best for 2024.

A reminder that Round 7 recommences on Saturday 3 February 2024 and there will be no training for teams that week unless your coach specifies. Full team training recommences in Week 2.

Basketball players, remember to keep up your fitness over the holidays and practice your skills and shooting. Look out for holiday camps or basketball opportunities, enjoy the break and see you recharged for the remainder of the season next year.

ISA Representative Selections

Congratulations to Darcy Aylmer and Andrew May on their selection to represent the ISA against CAS and GPS. The ISA 1st XI is coached by Mr Rodgers.

ISA Round 6 – 1st XI v St Patrick’s College @ Oxford Falls #1

SPC : 3 for 152 (32 overs) (Lucas Gleeson 1-26, Darcy Aylmer 1 for 28, Luke Austin 1 for 31) drew with 1st XI 3 for 16. The first wet Saturday for a long time greeted the 1st XI who were hosting St Patrick’s from Strathfield in the final ISA round of the year. Constant showers delayed the start until almost 1.30 pm, and the match was reduced to 32 overs a side. Darcy Aylmer won the toss and sent the opposition into bat. The runs were restricted well by some disciplined bowling from Darcy Aylmer, Jared Fernandes, and Lucas Gleeson in particular. Luke Austin bowled with fire and beat the bat several times, while Ollie Freeman took a fine running catch. Only 8 overs were permitted as the weather closed in and the match as abandoned. Thanks must go to the Oxford Falls ground staff for the preparation of the pitch and ground during a wet week. Everyone at the ground was impressed with the conditions that allowed 40 overs on such a damp day.                                 Mr P Rodgers

Mr David Reay - Cricket Convenor

Squash

Unfortunately, SPX 3 lost their semi-final in a tight match against St Andrew's 5 last weekend. Good luck to Cameron Giang and Thomas Kneeshaw as they take on BRIARS 6 for third place in this weekend’s final fixture.

Tennis

It was a disappointing conclusion to the competition with all games washed-out. Consequently, the competition medals have been awarded based on the ladder and accumulated points.

Congratulations to our Winning and Runner-up players, tabled below. Medals will be presented as soon possible.

I’d like to thank our coaches, Ms Boyle, Mrs Fileman and Mr Petrie on behalf of the players and myself as their support ensued the smooth running of the competition. Thank you to players, parents, grandparents, and siblings who all contributed to making this such a successful competition.

I look forward to seeing everyone back on court Term 1 2024 for the next competition rounds of Summer NSTA. I anticipate, there will be some tweaking of teams and divisions with the aim of providing competitive tennis as well as a positive team experience. I welcome any feedback you may have for next year’s competition.

Mrs Karen Keighery - NSTA Tennis Convenor
