Year 1/2 News

Learning Centre One

How are we already entering Week 7! It has been a very busy and exciting time for our Year 1/2 students, with lots of learning taking place over the past fortnight. The students have been working hard across all learning areas and it has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm, growth, and engagement in the classroom.

Inquiry:

In Inquiry, the Year 1/2 students have been learning about where they live. We have been exploring our city, Melbourne, and talking about the different places people like to visit. Students have enjoyed sharing their own experiences and learning more about what makes our city a special place to live.

Literacy:

During our “Ask Aunty” sessions, students have been learning about the seasons and how they are understood in Aboriginal culture. They have also been introduced to Bardi language, exploring new words and gaining an appreciation for the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and knowledge.

In Literacy, students have been learning about pronouns and how they are used in sentences. They have also been exploring the structure of information texts and using this knowledge to begin writing their own information reports.

Maths:

In Mathematics, students have been learning about place value and developing their understanding of two-digit numbers. They have been representing multiples of 10, writing numerals, and exploring different ways to represent two-digit numbers.

Students have also been practising reading and representing numerals using a variety of materials, such as blocks and visual models, to support their understanding. We have been working on comparing and ordering numbers, helping students recognise which numbers are larger or smaller and where they belong on a number line.

Religion:

The students' have been learning how to pause, think, and reflect on the questions and wonderings we have about the world around us. Reflection helps us notice what we are curious about, what we are learning, and how we can grow.

In our learning, we also explored the story of Jesus spending 40 days in the desert. During this time, Jesus faced challenges and temptations, but he chose to make good choices and stay true to what he believed was right.
