Prep News

It has been a busy and exciting couple of weeks in Prep, with lots of wonderful learning happening across our classroom!
Ā
š Literacy
Students have been enjoying reading some different books by author Joy Cowley. These books feature lots of rhyme and repetition to support early reading skills. The books that we rotated this week wereĀ Mrs Wishy-Washy, The Farm Concert andĀ The Meanies. Students then used some creative ways to retell the stories.
Ā
š¤ Phonics
We have met two more of Miloās friendsā¦
Peter Penguin ā /p/
Tim TurtleĀ ā /t/.Ā
Students are beginning to use the sounds that they have learnt toĀ sound out simple words when reading and writing. We have also introduced our firstĀ āheart wordsā. These are words that students learn āby heartā because we have not yet learned all the sounds in the word, or the sounds are uncommon. Our first heart words areĀ I,Ā the andĀ my.
Ā
ā° Numeracy
Students have been practising their counting skills usingĀ one-to-one correspondence. This means touching or moving each object as they count so that each number is matched with one item. This helps children understand that the last number they say tells them how many there are altogether.
Ā
āļø Religion
Students have begun learning aboutĀ Lent. They have been exploring the symbols and colours associated with this special time in the Church calendar.
Ā
šØāš©āš§āš¦ Inquiry
Students have enjoyed sharing special memories with their families and exploring how they have grown and changed over time; from when they were babies to the big Grade Prep students they are today!
Ā
š„ Buddies
This week we also had ourĀ first Buddy session with our Grade 5 partners. Students ate lunch together and then the Grade 5 students read a story with their Prep buddy. It was lovely to see new friendships beginning to form. Buddy sessions will take placeĀ every second Tuesday afternoon.
Ā
š Goodbye Amelia
We also said aĀ sad goodbye to Amelia, who has been working in our learning space as an LSO this year. Amelia has spent time getting to know all of the children and supporting their learning. We will miss her and wish her all the very best as she moves to Queensland.
Ā
š Reminders for Families
From next week, following theĀ Labour Day public holiday on Monday,Ā Prep students will begin attending school full time. We are very proud of how well the children have settled into school routines and are excited for all the learning ahead!
