Clayfield Swimming

Clayfield Swimming Water Safety Week
Further from the amazing work our HPE staff have been doing in our school swimming program, Clayfield Swimming will be including water safety elements into each lesson during Week 9 learn-to-swim lessons.
Water Safety: A Lifesaving Skill for Every Child
Water is a big part of life in Australia, but recent statistics highlight a growing concern. The Royal Life Saving Australia National Drowning Report 2025 recorded 357 drowning deaths in 2024–25, the highest in almost 30 years and 27% above the 10-year average.
Even more concerning for families:
- Nearly half of Year 6 students cannot swim 50m or tread water for two minutes
- Many children stop swimming lessons between ages 7–9, before mastering essential survival skills
Increased time spent in unpatrolled waterways and reduced swimming ability are contributing to rising risks
Why This Matters
Drowning can happen quickly and silently. For children, safety depends not just on being able to swim, but on having the confidence and skills to respond in unfamiliar situations.
Clayfield Swimming Water Safety Week
During Week 9, the Clayfield Swimming instructors will be including the below skills in our regular after-school lessons to help our swimmers be safer in the water:
- Deep water safety entries and exits
- Treading water
- Long distance swimming
- Swimming through unfamiliar water without goggles
Vital lifesaving survival skills
Our Message to Families
Ongoing participation in swimming lessons is one of the most important steps you can take to keep your child safe. Developing strong water safety skills now will support their confidence, wellbeing, and ability to enjoy the water for years to come. We strongly encourage all our families to continue swimming during the cooler months to progress on the skills they have already learnt in Term 1.
Wellness and Wellbeing Swimming for our Year 11 to12 Students
As assessment and exam periods approach, many students experience increased stress, pressure, and fatigue. Finding healthy ways to manage this is essential, not only for wellbeing, but also for academic performance.
One of the most effective (and often overlooked) strategies is regular physical activity, particularly swimming. Time in the water provides a natural break from screens, study, and daily pressures, allowing students to reset and refocus.
