Green Team recycling update
The Year 6 Green Team has been busy championing sustainability every Tuesday at recess. Students have been collecting organic waste for the FOGO bin, as well as gathering soft plastics, which are then taken to the South Hobart Tip for recycling.
While it’s great that soft plastics can be repurposed into products like road materials, reducing plastic use in the first place is still the most effective approach. Families can help by choosing low‑waste options such as reusable containers instead of plastic wrap, or selecting items packaged in cardboard or larger bulk bags rather than multiple small plastic packets. We are still seeing a significant amount of plastic waste in lunchboxes, which leads to unnecessary litter at school.
Each Tuesday is Nude Food Day, encouraging students to bring lunches free from single‑use plastics. The Green Team has been acknowledging students with sustainable lunchboxes, and at the recent line-up assembly, two beeswax wraps were awarded as prizes.
Families wishing to recycle soft plastics at home can do so free of charge at the South Hobart Tip, as well as the Glenorchy and Mornington tips, and at the Glebe Hill Shopping Centre.
