Checkmate! SMC makes power moves at Interschool Chess Tournament
On Monday 30 March, 15 of our students competed in the Term 1 Interschool Chess Tournament, run by Black Square Chess. This was the first time we were able to field both a junior and a senior team.
Our Senior School students, participating in their very first tournament, placed 7th, and our junior team achieved an impressive equal 4th. A special congratulations to Suvaani Rajbhandari (Year 6), who finished 5th overall out of approximately 90 junior competitors.
Chess Club will continue in Term 2 on Fridays, and we are always delighted to welcome new members.
Connecting cultures: Afternoon tea for new EALD families
Last Wednesday, we hosted an afternoon tea for our new EALD (English as an Additional Language or Dialect) families. It was great to see so many parents and students get together as a final celebration of Harmony Week, which was an opportunity to share cultures, customs and languages.
Parents and carers exchanged knowledge about traditional clothing, and we all learned and participated in a dance on the deck of Murphy's Café. There was plenty to eat and drink, and everyone appreciated the chance to meet other new families and SMC staff members.
Let’s continue to value and celebrate the diversity of our school community throughout the rest of the year!
