The Year 7 EXCEL Sport group have spent the last 6 weeks training for the Touch Football All Schools Victorian Championships. Despite only just learning the game the students picked up the skills and tactics very well.
On the day the girls started the group games in great style and finished with a record of 4 wins and 1 loss. They beat Haileybury College in the first final and made it to the Grand Final. They then played a fantastic game against Mentone Grammar but lost one try to none. Well done girls.
The boys team also played well in the group stage finishing at 3 wins and 2 losses. They played Hallam in the first final who had previously beat them but came away with the win 1-0. In the Grand Final they came up against a strong Haileybury College side. The boys played hard but lost the came 3 tries to 1.
Well done to the students who all tried really hard throughout the day. They should be very proud of themselves considering they finished as the second team in the state for Year 7 Touch Footy respectfully!

On Sunday 24th March, the Year 9 EXCEL Sport class competed in the 2XU Fun Tri at St Kilda Beach. The students spent 7 weeks training for the event throughout our class time. The race consisted of a 300m swim, 13km bike ride and a 3km run. It was an outstanding day with the school being represented with distinction in the community by our EXCEL Sport students. All the students completed the event with a great sense of satisfaction and pride. Congratulations to Harper G, Jack W and Thomas C for finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in our class for the boys, and Tierna R, Charli F and Audrey R for finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in our class for the girls. A special thank you to Mr. Garton, Mr. Hayes and Mr. Andriessen for giving up their time throughout the term to assist in the training, Mr. Leith and Ms. Winterton for also competing with the students, and Mrs Brand for giving up her Sunday to assist and support us in this event.
During the term, the Year 10 EXCEL Sport class was invited to attend and assist at the Carrum Primary School and Seaford North Primary School Athletics Carnivals. The students were divided into small groups, and then given an event to either marshal, record, or measure. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase our program in the community and demonstrate the students’ ability to coordinate and supervise a sporting event. The coaching hours are also an important contribution to the Certificate II in Sports Coaching they are undertaking in class. I was extremely proud of the maturity and responsibility displayed by the students throughout the day. The Carrum and Seaford North Primary School communities were highly complementary to our EXCEL Sport Program and grateful for the assistance. Well done Year 10s.

On Tuesday 5th March and Thursday 7th March the Year 8 and 10 EXCEL Sport students competed at the 2024 Victorian Beach Volleyball Schools Cup Championships at South Melbourne Beach. 28 schools from all over Victoria compete in this event including many volleyball academies and private schools in either the Pairs competition or the Fours competition. Patterson River Secondary College entered 11 Fours teams across the 2 days and finished 14th in the State with some impressive results throughout the competition. Year 8 Patterson River Secondary College Girls 3 (Bri G, Lily D, Renny M, Mia S) played off in the State Round of 16 qualifying finals and placed equal 9th in the State. Year 10 Patterson River Secondary College Boys 2 (Zac E, Charlie M, Cal G and Archer F) played off in the State Semi Finals and finished equal 3rd in the State. A fantastic achievement from the EXCEL Sport Program and the competitiveness of our students was on full display over the 2 days. A special thank you to Mrs Brand and Mr Cafiso for your support and assisting with coaching during the tournament.
On Thursday 29th February, the EXCEL Sport class went to Mornington Yacht Club to experience sailing. For most students this was the first time they had learnt this technical skill and under the guidance of experienced instructors most students experienced success. The first group sailed in windier conditions which caused some grief. With capsizes, water filled boats and swinging booms, it was nice to see the students leave the beach content with their efforts and a smile on their face. Group 2 remained on the beach to train for an upcoming Beach Volleyball tournament. After a BBQ lunch, the groups swapped over, with Group 2 enjoying friendlier conditions to manoeuvre the boats. Thank you to the Mornington Yacht Club who provided great learning conditions for the students to succeed and Ms. Robbins for assisting throughout the day.
