Junior Report
Miss Deane - Junior Classroom Teacher
Literacy:
This fortnight, our Prep students learnt to read and recognise the sounds and letters j, w and v. They practised blending and reading words such as jug, wed, jab, Liv, jut, win, jot and Tav. Students also developed their handwriting by correctly forming the upper- and lower-case letters j, b, w, and v. They continued building their bank of high-frequency words by learning to read and write you, says, your and said.
For Literacy, the Year 1/2 students learnt to read and recognise the 'or' letter combination. They practised reading and spelling words such as torch, stork, thorns, brainstorm and acorn. Students also continued developing their understanding of suffixes, including -ed, -s, -es, -ing and -est. They explored how adding these suffixes changes the meaning of words and practised applying them correctly in their reading and writing.
All of the Junior students explored the features of narrative writing. They learnt that narratives are stories created to entertain and identified the key elements of a narrative, including characters, settings and problems. Students enjoyed reading a variety of narratives and discussing how authors develop interesting characters and exciting storylines. They then planned and created their own narratives, using their knowledge of story structure to develop engaging characters, settings and problems.
Maths:
Maths had our P–2 students exploring the concept of mass through a range of hands-on learning experiences. They learnt how to compare the masses of two objects by using a third object and investigated different ways to determine which objects were heavier or lighter.
Students also measured the mass of objects using informal units, such as linking cubes, and experimented with a variety of tools and strategies to measure and compare mass. These practical activities helped students develop their mathematical reasoning and understanding of measurement.
Art:
Our self portraits are well underway and will be finished this week (Friday)! Students are using their paper drafts to create their self portrait paintings, this is teaching students to come up with an idea and to refer back to their original draft when all of the excitement of painting begins. They are looking incredible and I cannot wait for you to finally view them.
