Reading

This fortnight in Reading, the Year 5 cohort has continued reading Wylah the Koorie Warrior. As they progress through the novel, students have been developing a range of comprehension skills, including making predictions, summarising, retrieving information, and using inference to deepen their understanding of the text.

A key focus has also been making text-to-world connections, encouraging students to link the events, themes, and characters in the novel to real-world issues, history, and their own understanding of Aboriginal cultures and perspectives. It has been wonderful to see the Year 5 cohort engaging in thoughtful discussions and using evidence from the text to support their ideas while becoming more confident and reflective readers.

Social and Emotional Learning

NAIDOC Week

This fortnight in Social and Emotional Learning, the Year 5 cohort celebrated NAIDOC Week by exploring the artwork of Lin Onus and learning about the significance of Aboriginal art and storytelling. Students discussed how art can communicate culture, identity, and connection to Country, while developing an appreciation for the rich traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Inspired by Lin Onus' unique artistic style, students created their own Aboriginal-inspired artworks, carefully incorporating colour, pattern, and symbolism. This learning encouraged students to demonstrate our school values of kindness, responsibility, and resilience by showing respect for First Nations cultures and engaging thoughtfully in the creative process. It was wonderful to see the Year 5 cohort express their creativity while deepening their understanding of Australia's rich cultural heritage.

Project Rockit

Learning about the importance of kindness and respect was a key focus for the Year 5 cohort this fortnight. Students participated in the Project Rocket incursion, where they explored positive relationships, bullying prevention, and strategies for responding to challenging situations.

Through engaging activities and discussions, students reflected on the impact of their words and actions and learned how to support others in creating a safe and inclusive school community. This learning reinforced our school values of kindness, responsibility, and resilience, encouraging students to be respectful, courageous, and positive role models.
