Foundation & Year 1 News 

Reading 

In Reading, Foundation and Year 1 students explored the skill of retelling a story by identifying its key elements, including the characters, setting, problem, solution, and important events. Students listened to and viewed a range of texts and videos before drawing pictures and writing sentences to retell the stories in their own words. They also began exploring rhyming words by listening for, identifying, and matching words that rhyme.

Writing 

In Writing, students continued developing their understanding of grammar by focusing on full stops, capital letters, and question marks. They applied these skills when writing and editing sentences, understanding where each punctuation mark should be used correctly based on the purpose and meaning of the sentence. Students also explored the structure of a sentence by learning that complete sentences are made up of different parts, including a noun and a verb.

Maths

Over the past fortnight, students explored the exciting world of 2D shapes and 3D objects. They identified and named common 2D shapes such as circles, squares, rectangles and triangles while learning about their attributes, including the number of sides and corners each shape had.

Students also investigated 3D objects including cubes, spheres, cones, cylinders and rectangular prisms. They compared these objects by discussing their attributes, such as whether they had flat or curved surfaces and whether they could roll, slide or stack.

Throughout their learning, students practised sorting and classifying shapes in different ways. They grouped shapes by their attributes, including the number of sides, corners, curved edges and flat faces, and explained the reasoning behind their choices.

Inquiry

Over the past fortnight, students explored how living things can be grouped and classified based on their features. They investigated the different animal classifications, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects, and learned about the characteristics that make each group unique.

Students also became plant detectives as they explored the school grounds to identify a variety of plants in our environment. They observed plants closely and identified their different features, including the roots, stem, leaves, flowers and seeds. Through discussions and hands-on observations, students learned about the important role each part of a plant plays in helping it grow and survive.

Social and Emotional Learning -

In Social and Emotional learning students have been exploring topics such as how to correctly behave in different settings such as the bathroom. They have also been exploring the importance of mistakes and how they are a part of learning. Students have also explored the difference between friendly and unfriendly behaviours that can be shown both outside and inside the classroom.

AUSLAN -

In AUSLAN students have been learning the signs for different animals including Koala, Kangaroo, Monkey and Wolf. They had the chance to practise each animal and show their understanding of what each sign was. Students have also been learning how to sign different WH words such as who, what, where and when.

Special Event

NAIDOC Week

Students in Foundation and Year 1 had the opportunity to explore the meaning of NAIDOC week through reading a story about a boy named Alfie and completing a piece of artwork on a green circle to show what things make them happy and resilient. These will all be displayed as a whole school artwork.
