🌿 Health and Wellbeing

At our school, we believe that Health and Wellbeing is an important part of every child’s learning and development. When children feel safe, connected, confident and supported, they are better able to engage in their learning, develop positive relationships and make the most of their school experience.

Health and wellbeing encompasses many areas of a child’s life. It includes physical wellbeing, emotional wellbeing, social connections, positive relationships, resilience, confidence and personal safety. Through our everyday interactions, classroom learning and school programs, we will continue to provide opportunities for students to develop the knowledge and skills they need to care for themselves and others.

💚 Physical Wellbeing

Physical wellbeing involves developing healthy habits that help children feel energised and ready to learn. We encourage our students to make healthy choices around nutrition, physical activity, sleep, hydration and personal hygiene. Regular movement and active play are also important for supporting concentration, energy levels and overall health. We also encourage our students to understand that small, consistent choices can make a meaningful difference to how we feel each day.

💙 Emotional Wellbeing

Children experience a wide range of emotions. Learning how to recognise and manage these emotions is an important part of growing up. We support students to identify their feelings, express themselves appropriately, manage challenges and develop strategies for coping with difficult situations. Our students are encouraged to understand that it is okay to experience big emotions and that asking a trusted adult for help is a positive and important step.

💛 Positive Relationships

Strong and respectful relationships are central to wellbeing. We support students to develop friendships, empathy, communication skills and respect for others. Learning to listen, co-operate, solve problems and respond kindly when disagreements occur helps children build positive and lasting relationships. We also celebrate the diversity within our school community and encourage every child to understand that they are valued, respected and an important part of our school.

🌱 Building Resilience

Resilience is the ability to cope with challenges, adapt to change and keep going when things do not go as planned. Throughout their primary school years, our students will experience successes, mistakes, disappointments and new challenges. We help them develop resilience by encouraging them to have a go, learn from their mistakes, problem solve, persevere and recognise their own strengths. Developing a growth mindset helps children understand that learning takes time and that mistakes are a natural and valuable part of the learning process.

🏡Working together

Supporting children's wellbeing is a shared responsibility. Families play an important role in helping children develop healthy routines and positive habits at home. Regular sleep, physical activity, time away from screens, opportunities to play and connect with others and open conversations about feelings can all contribute to a child's wellbeing. Most importantly, children benefit from knowing that the adults around them are available to listen, support and encourage them.

🌟 Looking after ourselves and each other

Ultimately, health and wellbeing is about helping children develop the knowledge, confidence and skills to look after themselves and contribute positively to the wellbeing of others. We want all of our students to feel that they belong, that they are capable and that they have people around them who care about their wellbeing. By working together as a school community, we can create an environment where every child feels safe, supported, connected and ready to learn.

What does Health and Wellbeing Mean to Me?

Our year levels regularly review what Health and Wellbeing means to them and what they enjoy about Health and Wellbeing classes.

Here are their thoughts:

Grade Prep - Health and Wellbeing means looking after ourselves and others. We talk about eating healthy food, exercise, sleeping well and drinking water. We need to be kind, share, take turns and care for our friends. We are also learning how to solve problems and when to ask an adult for help. It’s important to stay calm and manage our feelings when we are upset, worried or frustrated.

In our health and wellbeing classes, we enjoy talking about our feelings and learning that it is okay to share them. We also enjoy role playing, where we practise being kind, sharing, solving problems and asking for help. We love listening to stories about kindness and friendship and talking about making good choices. We also enjoy circle time, where we can share, listen to our friends and learn together.

Grade 1 - Health and Wellbeing helps us learn about our feelings and how to be a good friend. It’s about being kind, friendly and caring. We learn how to help others when they are sad and how to be there for them. We learn about our feelings using the Zones of Regulation and ways to calm ourselves and relax. We also learn how to look after ourselves and others. In our health and wellbeing classes, we enjoy learning about feelings and how to help ourselves and others. We learn what we can do when someone is unkind to us and how to feel better, such as getting a drink or taking some time to calm down. We enjoy learning how to help others, be kind and make new friends. We also like learning how to support our friends when they need help.

Grade 2 - Health and Wellbeing means being happy, healthy, and caring for ourselves and others. It means having fun, making happy memories and being kind and respectful. It also means understanding our feelings, looking after our bodies, listening to others and helping when we can. Health and wellbeing helps us stay strong, calm and positive when things are hard. We enjoy sharing the happy moments as a kid before growing up.

Health and wellbeing classes are fun because we learn lots of things that help us in everyday life. Mindfulness helps us relax and feel calm. We learn how to solve friendship problems and be kind to others. We learn how to cope when we have problems and talk about our emotions. We also learn how to help others and make good choices. The classes help us have a happy, healthy and peaceful life.
Grade 3 - Health and Wellbeing means looking after your body, your feelings and your mind. It means being happy with who you are, thinking positively and being kind to yourself and others. It is important to understand our feelings and learning how to control them. We should treat others the way we want to be treated, include everyone and not compare ourselves to others. We should also be thankful for what we have and look after the people and world around us.

We enjoy health and wellbeing classes because they are a safe and relaxed place where we can be ourselves and talk about our feelings. We learn new things about ourselves and other people and get help when we have a problem. We can share our thoughts without being judged, talk to our teachers and friends and learn how to deal with tricky situations. We also enjoy being kind, listening to others and spending time together.

Grade 4 - Health and Wellbeing means looking after yourself and others. It means being kind, listening to people and treating others the way you would like to be treated. It is also about understanding and sharing your feelings without being judged. We can put ourselves in other people’s shoes and try to understand how they feel. Being positive, never giving up and following our school values of respect, resilience, responsibility and learning success can help us become better people. It also means looking after our body and staying healthy.

We enjoy health and wellbeing classes because they are fun, easy and relaxed. We can talk, share ideas and learn how to solve problems in different situations. We enjoy turning and talking because we can learn from each other. There is no pressure and it is okay to make mistakes because nobody judges us. We can be ourselves, have fun, smile and feel comfortable in these classes.
Grade 5 - Health and Wellbeing means looking after our body, mind and feelings. It means learning how to stay healthy, happy and strong, even when things are hard. We learn to keep trying, talk about our feelings and find ways to feel better. It means being ourselves, being proud of who we are and being grateful for the good things in our lives. It’s about understanding how others might feel putting ourselves in other shoes, while asking for help when we need it and supporting our friends.

We really enjoy our health and wellbeing classes because they give us a safe and positive space to talk, share and learn. We learn new strategies that help us cope with both little and bigger problems and support us when we are faced with different situations. We can be ourselves without feeling judged and it is a time when we can relax, calm our minds and feel comfortable. We especially enjoy sharing our thoughts, feelings and ideas with each other.

Grade 6 - Health and Wellbeing means being happy, healthy and confident while taking care of our mind, body and emotions. It means being respectful and kind to ourselves and others, making responsible choices and treating people the way we would like to be treated. It also means staying positive, managing our emotions and knowing how to cope when things are challenging. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Learning Success and Resilience help guide us to make good choices, keep learning and never give up.

We enjoy health and wellbeing classes because it is an easy and interesting subject where we learn ways to look after ourselves. We like sharing our ideas because we get to hear different opinions and can express our own thoughts without feeling judged. The class gives us a comfortable and safe space to be ourselves and talk openly. We also enjoy learning about respect and why it is important to respect ourselves, others and their feelings.
