Head of Year 9 - Josette Mercieca

Article by Carolyn Hernandez, Head of Performing Arts
Music can be an important part of the Year 9 experience. Many Year 9 students take the music classroom subjects – Music Performance 1 and 2, and Music Technology.
Instrumental and Vocal individual lessons also feature in many a Year 9’s week. Year 9 students are also integral participants in the co-curricular program. Students travel to Yirramboi to rehearse with the Symphonic Band, Gravity Band, String Orchestra, String Fusion, Rock Bands and Big Band. Rock band, Radium recently performed at the Canowindra Information Night and at the Welcome Assembly.
At Canowindra there are 2 additional lunchtime ensemble opportunities:
Tuesday: Year 9 Jazz with Mr Hornby
Wednesday: Year 9 Choir with Mrs Hernandez
Recently, a number of Year 9s attended Music Camp. Here are some reflections:
“Music camp was a great experience! I enjoyed bonding with new people and improving my music skills. I’m already looking forward to music camp next year”
- Matthew
“The Senior Choir had a great time at Music Camp this year! From singing new songs, to doing crazy warmups, every minute of our rehearsals we were making memories that we’ll never forget.
All our hard work from the 2 and a half days of camp culminated in a successful concert on the last day. Music Camp 2026 was great, and I can’t wait for Music Camp next year!”
– Talia
