At the beginning of the term, Year 6 Design and Technology students were introduced to the Technology Product Design Process and completed a brainstorming activity exploring a range of everyday uses for a wooden planter box. They then developed a design brief outlining the intended user, purpose, key design features, and project constraints.

A series of lessons focused on understanding and producing orthogonal drawings. Students created 2D representations of the planter box they will construct, concentrating on the side view and three possible slat design options.

In preparation for constructing the frame, students carefully measured and marked the plywood end pieces to ensure accuracy. Following a drill press demonstration and successful completion of a safety assessment, they drilled precise clearance holes in the plywood components. They also incorporated techniques that offer both functional and aesthetic benefits, including countersinking for flush fastener placement and sanding for a smooth, finished surface. With these steps complete, students are now ready to begin assembling the planter box frame.
