Level 5 & 6

Welcome to Week 2!
Welcome to Week 2! It has been wonderful seeing our Grade 5 and 6 students settle back into their routines and make a positive start to Term 4. With a busy and exciting term ahead, we look forward to continuing to build on our learning and encouraging students to make the most of their final term of the year.
Reminders:
Hats
With the warmer weather returning, it’s time for hats to come back to school!
Grade 5 and 6 students are reminded to bring their school hat back to school if they haven’t already, and to make sure they are wearing it during outdoor activities and break times.
Literacy
Reading
This week in Reading, students will continue exploring speeches and identifying the features that make public speaking effective and engaging. Students will analyse how speakers use language, expression, body language and persuasive techniques to communicate their messages and connect with an audience.
Through examining different examples, students will develop a deeper understanding of how effective speeches are structured and delivered, supporting their preparation for upcoming leadership speeches.
Writing
In Writing, students will begin focusing on planning and developing their own speeches. Students will explore how to structure their ideas clearly, communicate their strengths and experiences, and use persuasive language to engage their audience. This will provide students with opportunities to reflect on their personal qualities and consider how they can positively contribute to our school community.
Phormes
This week in Phormes, both Grade 5 and Grade 6 students will continue working through Spelling focus 211. Students will strengthen their understanding of spelling patterns, word structures and vocabulary, while applying these skills to their reading and writing.
Speaking and Listening
This week in Speaking and Listening, students will continue developing their public speaking skills through activities focused on speeches. Students will practise speaking clearly, using appropriate expression and maintaining eye contact, while building confidence when presenting their ideas to an audience.
Language Conventions
This week in Language Conventions, students will explore the correct use of and then and and within sentences. Students will investigate how these words can be used to connect ideas, sequence events and improve the clarity and flow of their writing.
What you can do at home:
- Encourage your child to practise speaking confidently and clearly when sharing their ideas or opinions.
- Discuss the qualities of an effective leader and how these could be communicated in a leadership speech.
- Ask your child to share some of the strategies they have learnt for making a speech engaging and memorable.
Maths
This week in Maths, both Grade 5 and Grade 6 students will continue exploring Data, building on their understanding of how information can be collected, organised, represented and interpreted.
Students will investigate different methods of displaying data, including tables and graphs, and consider how these representations can help communicate information clearly. They will also develop their ability to interpret results, identify patterns and draw conclusions based on the information presented.
What you can do at home:
- Encourage your child to identify different types of graphs and data representations in newspapers, online articles or sporting statistics.
- Create a simple family survey and discuss how the results could be displayed using a graph.
- Ask your child to explain what a graph is showing and what conclusions they can draw from the information.
CBL
Big Idea: Survival and Service
Challenge:Strengthen our community by giving back and inspiring others to pay it forward.
Essential Question:How do acts of service help communities survive, connect and thrive?
Guiding Questions:
- What does it mean to serve others?
- How has our school and wider community invested in us?
- Our time, skills and effort can make a genuine difference. How?
This week in CBL, students will continue exploring our Term 4 focus of Survival and Service, considering how their time, skills and efforts can make a positive difference within our school and wider community.
Some students will be involved in preparing for our upcoming school production, developing their creativity, collaboration and teamwork skills. Other students will participate in activities focused on service, exploring meaningful ways they can give back, support others and positively contribute to their community.
Through these experiences, students will develop an understanding of how working together, taking responsibility and using their individual strengths can help strengthen connections and make a lasting impact.
Wellbeing
This week in Wellbeing, students will focus on Cyber Safety (CS), exploring the importance of making safe, respectful and responsible choices when engaging with others online.
Students will consider how their actions and communication can impact others and discuss strategies for navigating online situations safely and positively. These discussions will encourage students to think critically about their digital interactions and the importance of demonstrating respect both online and offline.
What you can do at home:
- Discuss the importance of communicating respectfully with others, both online and in person.
- Encourage your child to share what they have learnt about staying safe and making responsible choices online.
- Talk about the importance of teamwork, responsibility and supporting others within the school and wider community.
