Hats

If your child’s school hat found its way home over the holidays, please remember to send it back to school this week. In line with our SunSmart policy, our motto is 'hat on, play on!'

Curriculum

*Please remind your child to go to the toilet before they enter the classroom.

Phonics and reading

We are continuing to learn about long vowels and the role of final E. We will learn about the o_e pattern, as in rope, the e_e pattern, as in eve, and complete a long vowel review.

Our learning focus will include reading words and short texts, spelling words containing these patterns, and writing simple sentences using our new spelling knowledge.

What can you do at home?

• Support your child to read the decodable book and/or UFLI text in their Reading Pocket. Try and aim to read every day, if you can.

• The 'Roll and Read' page is a great way to practise sounding out and blending words, especially for students who find reading sentences a little challenging.

•Review the letter names and sounds for all letters of the alphabet. When practising, say them like this: “A spells /a/.” Ask your child if they can show you the cued articulation for the sounds.

•Learn the Heart Words (in red booklet).  New words were sent home last week.

• Work through the optional UFLI pages.

Literature: reading responses and writing

Our mentor text is a non-fiction book about Clouds, which connects to our new CBL inquiry, The Reason for the Season. Students will explore the different layers of clouds in the sky and learn about the various types of clouds. They will use this new knowledge to create a 'cloud types' poster, and as well as writing their own cloud facts using the words 'can, have, are' to organise their ideas.

Students will continue to write their own simple narratives. They will create a text with a clear beginning, middle and end, using our mentor text as inspiration and support. Students will also continue to develop their handwriting skills using their Sky, Grass, Ground books, with a focus on correct letter formation, size and placement.

What can you do at home?

•Encourage your child to write about things they are interested in - a picture, a favourite animal, something they did that day or a story they have imagined. Encourage them to sound out words using the sounds they know and have a go at spelling independently.

•Help your child practise writing their name with a capital letter at the beginning and lowercase letters for the rest of their name.

Maths

Students will continue learning about data by collecting and organising information to answer simple yes/no questions. They will practise representing data with two possible outcomes and using their results to answer questions about the information they have collected.

What can you do at home?

•Ask your child to sort things such as socks, toys, cutlery or buttons into two groups. Encourage them to explain what is the same or different about each group.

•Collect simple data by asking a yes/no question such as, “Do you like apples?” or “Do you have a pet?” and record the answers from family members. Talk about which group has more, fewer or the same.

CBL

We have begun our new CBL inquiry, exploring the Big Idea of Survival / Systems through our investigation of weather. Students will be learning about clouds through our mentor text, exploring the different types of clouds and how to identify them. They will create their own 'Cloud Spotter' to take outside and use to observe the sky, seeing if they can identify and name some of the clouds they have been learning about.

Wellbeing

SWPBS

Our focus is Be Kind – Showing Patience and Waiting My Turn. Students will practise being patient when waiting to speak, join a game, use equipment or have their turn during learning activities. We will explore why waiting patiently is important, helping others feel respected, included and valued. By learning to wait our turn, we can make our classroom a kinder and happier place for everyone!

Respectful Relationships

Students will explore positive relationships through the topic of Fair and Friendly Play. They will learn what it means to play fairly, treat others with respect and make sure everyone feels included and has the opportunity to join in.
