Level 3 & 4

Welcome to Week Two! It was fantastic to have everyone back to school last week. Our students returned settled, positive and ready to learn, and it was lovely to see reconnections, conversations, laughter and excitement fill our week.
Grade 4 Camp
Our Grade 4 students head off to Philip Island Adventure Resort early on Wednesday morning. With beautiful weather forecast, we’re sure they will enjoy a fantastic experience while developing their independence and building new skills. Students will return on Friday afternoon.
CURRICULUM
Literacy
Reading
This week will continue to examine our mentor text “Once I was a Giant” by Zeno Sworder. We are exploring the choices that authors make when writing through illustration, language choice and story structure.
Writing
In Writing, we are using the structure and language of the mentor text to guide our own writing. We are using personification in our writing to bring a non-human character to life.
WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:
- Talk about our mentor text with your child. Look for examples of personification in nature and around the home. E.G. the leaves are dancing in the wind. The water is jumping about in the pot.
Maths
Grade 3 & 4
Both Grade 3 and 4 will be focusing on data investigation. In Grade 3 the focus will be on representing data in pictographs and column graphs. Grade 4 will be focused on pictographs and column graphs with non-unit scales.
WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:
- Talk about different types of data you have encountered in real life scenarios, such as the Census, and how it might be used.
- Keep an eye out for Bogong Moths and record the data on Invertebrates Victoria/Zoos Victoria – Moth tracker
CBL (Challenge Based Learning)
This term, we will be beginning an exciting new Challenge Based Learning (CBL) topic focused on, "Survival". Throughout this unit, students will investigate what it means for living things to survive and the different factors that can help or hinder their survival. Our essential question for the unit is: What is survival?
As we progress through our learning, students will explore two key guiding questions: How do species depend on each other for survival? and How does an environment impact survival? These questions will encourage students to investigate relationships between living things, food chains and ecosystems, as well as how changes to an environment can affect the ability of species to survive.
Our CBL challenge will be: Help a living thing survive in a changing environment.
This week, students will continue to share their wonderings and questions about what they have seen before creating a class word splash of words and ideas they associate with survival. This will provide a foundation for our investigations as we begin to develop our understanding of what living things need to survive.
Wellbeing
SWBPS
In response to what we are seeing in our classrooms, we will be focusing on taking responsibility for and showing respect for property. This will include personal, borrowed and school owned belongings. We are seeing a lack of care being taken with property at school and would love to see an improvement in this area.
Respectful Relationships
We will be focusing on problem solving. Students will identify different actions someone could take to solve a problem and identify possible consequences
of actions used to solve a problem.
Kitchen Garden
We continue to rely on the support of our wonderful parent helpers to ensure this program is safe and successful. We also warmly welcome help from extended family such as grandparents, aunts, and uncles. If you or a family member can spare some time to support the program, the sign-up link is:

Tuesday 27th- 7:30 to 8:15pm- Parent online workshop: Cyberbullying & Resilience - Supporting young people to manage wellbeing online (Cyber Safety Project)
-With spring here it’s time for hats to come back to school!
Grade 3 and 4 students are reminded to bring their school hat back to school if they haven’t already and to make sure they are wearing it during outdoor activities and break times.
-Please help support your child to make sure their iPad is charged and ready to use each day.
HOLIDAYS
If your family is planning a holiday during the school term, we kindly ask that parents communicate this directly with their child’s teacher and Julie Crawford, rather than relying on students to pass the information on. A quick email letting us know the dates your child will be away is all that is needed and helps us plan for their absence and return to learning.
Thank you for helping us stay informed and ensuring clear communication between home and school.
