Performing Arts

In the classroom…

Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students are continuing to work on songs from Beauty and the Beast JR., with a focus on learning and refining the choreography for the songs they will perform in the production.

Grade 3/4 students are continuing their Dance unit, exploring how the same movement can look and feel completely different depending on how it is performed. This week, students will focus on time and dynamics, experimenting with changes in speed, energy and movement quality, such as fast and slow, strong and gentle, or sharp and smooth. They will then apply these ideas to short movement phrases of their own.

Grade 5 students are beginning a new Dance unit this week, exploring how everyday actions and simple movements can be transformed into choreography. Students will experiment with changing the speed, size, direction and energy of movements, before combining their ideas into short movement sequences with a partner.

Grade 6 students are continuing their creative projects. This week, they will finish their creative pitch and planning documents before beginning work on their chosen project. Students will continue to follow the creative process as they develop a piece of work in Drama, Music and/or Dance, building on their existing skills or exploring something new.

Auslan

Grade 1 and 2

This week in Auslan, students will continue learning signs from Advance Australia Fair, adding new vocabulary as they practise signing along with the national anthem.

Students will also be introduced to handshapes and learn why they are an important part of Auslan. They will explore and practise several common handshapes, noticing how changing the shape of the hand can change the meaning of a sign.

Grade 3 and 4

In week 2, students will become sign detectives as they explore some of the features that make up an Auslan sign. Students will focus particularly on location, investigating where signs are produced in relation to the body, including the head and face, mouth and chin, hands, chest and the signing space in front of the body.

Students will also explore whether signs use one or two hands and consider the role of non-manual features, such as facial expressions. Students will practise looking closely at how signs are formed and identifying their different features.

Grade 5 and 6

In Auslan this week, students will deepen their understanding of HOLME (Handshape, Orientation, Location, Movement and Expression) - the key features used to form signs accurately.

Through fast-paced team challenges and a “spot the mistake” quiz, students will analyse signs and identify whether changes to handshape, orientation or movement affect how a sign is produced. Students will then put their knowledge into practice by researching signs that share a particular handshape and teaching their findings to the class.

STEM

STEM sessions will explore the concepts of Chemical Science in the first half of Term 2.

Grade 1 and 2

Students will explore edible mixtures that can form new products when combined, describing the properties of the ingredients before and after mixing.

Grade 3 and 4

Students are continuing their investigations into natural and made materials such as fibres, metals, glass and plastics. This week, they are looking at how materials are combined in everyday items, focusing on shoes and backpacks. They are identifying the different materials used and describing their benefits and properties, such as strength and flexibility.

Grade 5 and 6

Students are continuing to explore irreversible changes, with a focus on rust. They are learning how rust forms, what conditions are needed for it to occur, and why it is an irreversible change. Students are also making connections to how rust affects everyday objects.

Swimming Program

Our swimming program for Prep to Grade 4 is coming up in November. The program focuses on developing swimming strokes and learning important personal survival skills in, on and around the water.

These lessons help build a foundation of swimming and water safety skills, giving students the knowledge and confidence to enjoy aquatic activities as safely as possible in a range of environments.

Keep an eye out on Sentral for further information, including payment and permission details.

This Week in PE

Prep

Over the coming weeks, students will be developing their throwing skills, focusing on the correct technique when performing an underarm throw. They will practise throwing a variety of objects for different purposes before progressing to the overarm throw.

Grades 1 & 2

Students will be applying their fundamental movement skills in a variety of minor games. These activities provide opportunities to practise, develop and combine their skills while building confidence, cooperation and an understanding of game rules.

Grades 3 & 4

Students will be developing and demonstrating their catching skills through a variety of games and activities. They will focus on tracking objects, positioning their bodies and using the correct technique to catch successfully in different situations.

Grades 5 & 6

Students will be learning the fundamental skills and rules of Flag Football, a non-contact version of American Football. They will practise skills such as passing, catching, evading defenders and working as a team. Flag Football is also set to feature at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, making it an exciting sport for students to explore!

Visual Arts

In the classroom this week...

Prep students will be creating a ceramic Santa from clay. Their focus will be on shaping and joining clay and including all the elements that make up Santa, including his hat!

Grade 1/2 students will begin a project based on the upcoming production of Beauty and the Beast Jr. Using cardboard and tin foil they will make a ‘magic mirror’ and embellish it with jewels and sequins.

Grade 3/4 students will begin a unit on the art element ‘value’ (the relative lightness or darkness of a tone or colour). They will construct an ice-cream cone using cardboard, newspaper and masking tape before putting papier mache over the top.

Grade 5 students will be continuing to make their puppet for their 2026 buddy. They will be sewing it together and adding embellishments to make their animal puppet look realistic.

Grade 6 students will be creating their ‘legacy tile’. They have designed it and will make it out of clay building and carving into their slab.
