My Brilliant Career

Excursion

It’s not often that our students get the opportunity to see one of their English texts being performed on stage but on Wednesday 11 February, Year 12 English students were joined by the Year 11 Drama class on an excursion to see the Melbourne Theatre Company’s production of My Brilliant Career.

The classic Australian novel on which the production is based was written over a hundred years ago and tells the story of a teenage girl, Sybylla, who longs for a career but rails against the limitations of late nineteenth century society. The performance brought the story to life with humour and poignancy, and provoked some interesting discussion amongst the Year 12s about the way it has been re-interpreted and adapted into a rollicking Aussie musical for modern audiences. Drama students, on the other hand, were inspired by the way actors transformed into different characters and played a variety of instruments, as well as the performance style, lighting, costumes and set, which included a central revolving piano.

It was great to see the thirty-three students appreciating the opportunity to see live theatre, as well as spending an enjoyable afternoon together off-campus.
