Year 5/6

English

In our English Literacy Block we have been continuing to engage with the class novel War Horse.  Students have been unpacking the main ideas and vocab in the book and have drafted and published a narrative where they wrote from the perspective of an animal, just as in the mentor text.

Students have also learning about elements of language conventions, handwriting and completing a daily review to consolidate the learning from previous weeks.

Maths

Over the past few weeks in Mathematics, students have been developing their understanding of place value and decimals. They have been learning how to read, write and represent decimal numbers and exploring how the value of each digit changes depending on its place. Students have used number lines and place value charts to model decimals and compare their size. They have also practised ordering decimal numbers and identifying which numbers are greater or smaller. Through activities such as interpreting temperatures, measuring lengths, and solving real-world problems, students have been strengthening their confidence in working with decimals and explaining their mathematical thinking.

Humanities

Currently in Humanities, the 5/6 students are learning about democracy and how decisions are made within our communities. They have been exploring the three levels of government in Australia and the different roles each level plays. Students have also been discussing leadership qualities and ways they can demonstrate these qualities both in the school yard and within the wider community.

Events

On Tuesday our Year 5/6 students went to Grovedale College to experience a day in the life of a secondary school student.  They explored the Auditorium where they will hit the stage in the 5/6 Performance next term and participated in an art or science class, as well as joinging in a session with the sports program.

We had a number of our 5/6 students represent our school at Interschool Soccer at Surf Coast Reserve in Torquay. Throughout the day, all students demonstrated outstanding teamwork, respect and responsibility, making us incredibly proud.

Congratulations to both our Boys and Girls teams for making it all the way to the finals and finishing in an impressive 2nd place. A special mention also goes to our Mixed team for finishing 3rd. It was fantastic to see our students supporting one another and representing our school with such positive spirit.

Our Year 5 students begin their NAPLAN assessments next on Wednesday 11th March and will take place on the next couple of weeks.  We please ask that iPads come to school charged and headphones are brought if your child has them during the next two weeks.
