Year 1/2

Over the past few weeks, we have been very busy in our Literacy block and the students have been working hard to build their reading, writing and phonics skills.

Reading Packs

All students have now taken home their Reading Packs. Please remember to record your child’s reading in their yellow reading log book. Readers will be changed once a week, and students will keep the same reader for the week to practise their reading skills, build fluency and develop confidence. Re-reading the same text helps strengthen accuracy and expression. Please remember to pack these to school everyday as we will also be using them in the classroom.

Phonics

We are currently trialling split phonics groups, with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students working separately. This allows us to provide more targeted teaching at each year level. Students are getting used to the movement between groups, and we are proud of how well they are adapting to this new routine.

This week in Phonics:

  • Grade 1 students have been focusing on the long vowel sounds: ee, ea, ie, e-e
  • Grade 2 students have been learning the graphemes: eigh, ea, ae and e

Literacy

In Literacy, we are continuing with our weekend recounts, focusing on sequencing events in the correct order. Students are also exploring sequencing through well-known picture books such as Possum Magic and Diary of a Wombat, identifying the order of events and discussing what happens at the beginning, middle and end of the story.

It has been a productive and exciting few weeks in Literacy, and we are very proud of the effort students are putting into their learning.

Maths

In Maths, we have been busy exploring numbers in hands-on and engaging ways! Students have been using number lines, place value charts, and MAB blocks to help them read, write, and make numbers.

In addition, students have been practising skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. This skill helps them count collections quickly and builds a strong foundation for understanding addition, multiplication, and number patterns.

We are proud of how students are developing their number sense and enjoying discovering patterns in maths through these fun activities!

Humanities

Students have been focussing on sounds in stories, and how adding sound effects can make a story more interesting. Students explored different sounds in different cultures, and even made their own maracas. This week and next week students will be creating musical instruments out of recycled materials to eventually use within a story telling activity.

Thank you to all the families that brought in some materials for students to use, they are very excited to make these and are looking great so far!

Respectful Relationships

Students have been learning about the importance of kindness and how this can support good friendships. Students learnt that kindness can look like many things, including good manners, helping a friend when they're hurt, doing kind favours or gestures, and saying kind words.
