Senior Girls Football Report

The G.D. Senior girls football team prepared very well for this year’s annual carnival, which was held at Pedrina Park on Monday August 12. Numbers at all training sessions were most encouraging, and it made the task of reducing the final squad down to 22 players a difficult one.
Sophie Taylor of Yr 12 was a dedicated and skillful player within the group who trained with vigour and enthusiasm on all occasions. She was unanimously selected by her peers to be our Captain for this carnival and on the day was a fierce competitor as well as an inspirational leader.
We played 5 shortened games against other district schools. We were successful in 4, and unsuccessful in 1. It was unfortunate that we played the eventual winning team, Good Shepherd/Heywood S.C. combined early in the day, as I do believe we got better and better as the day wore on.
Most girls made positive contributions over the 5 games, but we did have some excellent players. Centre half forward Sharnee Hutchison was superb in all matches. Lexi Purcell, Ella Sevior and Caitlin Urquhart were tireless in their “on-ball” roles and never gave up and provided lots of drive out of the centre. Across the half back line Captain Sophie Taylor, whose no-nonsense attack on the ball was a wonderful example for her team mates to follow, repelled many forward moves by the opposition. Grace Cleaver, centre half back, and later, ruck-person played very well, with safe marking and long kicks being a feature of her games. Tessa Kelly, Phoebe Dunn and the Meade sisters (Ellie & Jess) were also very credible players.
Special thanks to Rachel Hassett & Erin Hannig (runners) and Charlie Baker and Matt Calvert of Yr 10 (Umpires) for their generous contribution on the day.
