VCE Legal Studies - "Law Talks"

On the 14th of August our VCE Legal Studies Classes spent a day at ‘Law Talks’, run by the Victoria Law Foundation. The day consisted of a number of insightful presentations by the Victoria Law Reform Commission, Victoria Legal Aid, Juries Victoria, Victoria Law Foundation, and Courts Victoria. Our day was certainly busy! It’s fair to say that all the presentations allowed us all to gain real-world knowledge and perception of the different employment opportunities, roles, and collaboration in different law sectors. All the information we were exposed to on the day certainly helped everything we read and learn in the classroom come to life.

It’s assuredly a hard pick but the most exciting presentation was our first of the day, in Magistrate Lethbridge. His experience really allowed us all to gain an understanding of the reality of judging criminals. He spoke about the effect these weighted decisions can have on him personally, on victims and on the defendants themselves. His talk aslo gave us a deeper understanding of the often-complicated circumstances that lead to crimes, even telling us what he finds most difficult to witness in his courtroom. Another presentation that was very engaging was from Victoria Law Foundation by David Thomson a teacher-in-residence.  Mr Thomson supplied us with legal studies specific study tips, and having completed legal degrees, we definitely trusted his advice!

A massive thanks to Ms Neeson whose passion for our classes often result in the best excursions, like this one!
