Grade 5/6 Newsletter

During Core Literacy, the Grade 5/6 students have been learning rules about using a colon in a sentence to add further information and how 'but', 'so' and 'because' can be used to connect ideas, improve our sentence flow and create compound or complex sentences.
In Applied Literacy, the Grade 5/6 students have been learning the skills needed to write a persuasive text. The Grade 6 students have been exploring the knowledge of why it is or is not important to understand our family history through genealogy, as we work to convince the reader to see and support our side of the argument. This has been linked to our main character Celeste from our serial read, A Ghost In My Suitcase, which the students are really enjoying.
Learning about the structure of a Persuasive text is especially important for the Grade 5 students as they prepare for their NAPLAN testing in a couple of weeks.
And 6B 'checking for understanding' during Applied Literacy.
As part of their Maths lessons on Data, the students have been finding out about Primary and Secondary data and interpreting this data in the media.
They have also been learning to read and interpret pie charts.
