Prep Learning Reflection

Weeks 3 - 4

Over the past two weeks in Core Literacy, we have been focusing on the sounds and letters s, a, t, i, m. Students have been practising recognising these letters, saying their sounds and using them to begin building and reading simple words. We have loved seeing their confidence grow as they start blending sounds together!

As part of our social and emotional learning, we have been learning to recognise and describe our own emotions. Students have discussed different feelings such as happy, sad, excited and worried, and shared scenarios that might cause someone to feel these emotions. These conversations have supported our understanding of empathy and how our actions can impact others.

We have also been learning about what it means to be part of a team. Through class discussions and group activities, we have explored how to be kind, take turns, include others and work together. It has been wonderful to see students encouraging each other and practising these important skills in the classroom and playground.

In Maths, our friend Direction Duck has been helping us with correct number formation. We have been practising forward and backward slides and curves, to strengthen our fine motor skills and build strong foundations for writing numbers correctly. The students have enjoyed following Direction Duck’s instructions and showing great persistence as they practise.

In Applied Literacy, we have been visiting the families in Come Over to My House. Through this beautiful story, we have been learning about what makes each person unique. We have had rich discussions about similarities and differences between families, homes and daily routines, and celebrated the many ways people live, learn and connect with one another.

One-on-one interviews have continued throughout Weeks 3 and 4. We have absolutely loved seeing all the wonderful things our students can do. It has been a fantastic opportunity to celebrate their strengths, share their progress and set goals for the term ahead.

It has been a busy and exciting fortnight in Prep, and we are so proud of the growth we are already seeing!
