Year 11 History 

On Tuesday 1 September, the Year 11 Modern History classes visited the National Vietnam Veterans Museum in Newhaven, on Phillip Island. Upon arrival, the students were met by Russell and Dave, two veterans of the Vietnam War, who spoke to the students about conscription (national service) and their experiences during the Vietnam War. Following this, students watched a holographic audio-visual presentation, which provided them with an insight into Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War, including key battles such as the Battle of Long Tan and the reception veterans received upon returning to Australia.

The Year 11 students were then able to walk freely around the museum, providing them with a fantastic opportunity to see many different types of equipment, weapons and vehicles used during the conflict. Russell and Dave were incredibly insightful during this time and provided an extra depth to the students’ learning.

One of the key highlights was the opportunity for students to handle and try on a range of different items and uniforms used by soldiers during the conflict. The students had lots of fun handling the equipment and were shocked by just how heavy many of the items were.

On our way home, we stopped in San Remo for fish and chips, which was a lovely way to finish the excursion and gave the students an opportunity to relax and enjoy some time together after a fantastic day of learning.

The students represented Norwood fantastically, and they should be very proud of the respect and attention they demonstrated towards the veterans and the experiences they shared with us during the excursion.
