Dear Grade 3 Families,

Last week, students were busy learning across all areas of the curriculum. In Religious Education, they explored the Introductory Rites and Liturgy of the Word, developing an understanding of gathering, prayer and listening to Scripture. In English, students expanded their vocabulary, developed their sentence, paragraph and narrative writing skills, practised cursive handwriting and continued reading Charlotte’s Web. In Mathematics, they used positional language to describe and compare locations on maps. In Integrated Studies, students developed their finger puppets through character backstories, voice, movement and expression. In Auslan, they reviewed their signing skills, created and performed signed stories and completed assessment tasks. In Social and Emotional Learning, students explored Child Protection Week and children’s rights, focusing on safety, speaking up, asking for help and identifying trusted adults.

                  Learning for Term 3, Week 10

Religious Education:

In Religious Education, students will explore how we remember Jesus’ love at Mass. They will identify the main parts of the Mass and develop an understanding of what happens during each part. Students will discuss why we remember Jesus’ life, death and resurrection and how remembering these important events helps us to live out Jesus’ message of love. Through exploring Luke 22:19–20, students will reflect on the Last Supper and consider why Jesus asked his followers to share the bread and wine in remembrance of him. They will discuss what the bread and wine represented and how this special act continues to help Christians remember Jesus’ love and sacrifice at Mass.

English:

In English, students will build their vocabulary by exploring and using words such as wondrous, remarkable, listless, sneer, polysyndeton, hoarse, pompous, phenomenon, ail and garrulous. They will develop their understanding of complex sentences, conjunctions and punctuation, while learning how to “level up” sentences by adding detail, precise vocabulary and varied sentence structures. Students will investigate Greek number prefixes, including mon- meaning one and di- meaning two, and explore how these prefixes are used in English words. They will summarise Chapters 18–21 of Charlotte’s Web, focusing on the key events, Charlotte’s final days at the fair, Wilbur’s special prize, Charlotte’s death and Wilbur’s promise to protect her egg sac. Students will also continue their narrative writing, learn what literary devices are and explore how authors use them to create effects. Throughout their writing, students will focus on editing and rereading their work carefully to improve spelling, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary. 

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students will continue to develop their understanding of three-dimensional objects by describing and identifying them based on their features, including faces, edges, curved surfaces and vertices. They will use mathematical language such as three-dimensional, vertex and vertices to explain the characteristics of different objects. Students will build and compare three-dimensional objects, including constructing rectangular prisms using blocks and describing how their features are similar or different. They will also revise their understanding of time and consolidate previously learned mathematical concepts through a range of activities and problem-solving tasks.

Integrated Curriculum:

In Integrated Studies, students will finish their puppetry unit, applying their creativity and practical skills to complete and refine their puppets. They will explore how puppets can be used to create tension and drama, considering how movement, expression, characterisation and performance can engage an audience. Students will add the final details to their puppets and prepare them for presentation and performance.

Auslan:

In Auslan, students will develop their ability to communicate through signed stories by drawing and describing their favourite characters with detail and confidently signing their characters’ names. They will practise using the Auslan signs 'Open' and 'Put on' in different contexts and ways, while developing their vocabulary and confidence in using Auslan. Students will focus on using signs accurately, incorporating detail and expressing meaning clearly through signed stories.

Social & Emotional Learning:

In Social and Emotional Learning, students will explore the topic of understanding consent in action. They will learn that consent means permission, choice and respect, and that it is an important part of everyday interactions. Students will practise asking for permission, listening carefully to the response and respecting another person’s choice. They will explore how consent applies to situations involving personal space, belongings and joining in activities, and learn to recognise when someone may feel unsure or uncomfortable. Students will develop their ability to make respectful choices that help keep themselves and others safe.

What you can do at home:

• 📖 Read together: Read for 15–20 minutes each evening and discuss Charlotte’s Web and new vocabulary.
• ✍️ Practise learning: Review vocabulary, “level up” sentences, practise telling the time and identify 3D shapes using faces, edges and vertices.
• 🎭 Create and sign: Use a finger puppet to create a short story using voice, movement and expression. Practise the Auslan signs OPEN and PUT ON.
• 💛 Talk about respect: Read Luke 22:19–20 together and discuss Jesus’ love, as well as consent, choice and respect in everyday situations.

Important Classroom Reminders:

• Fidget Toys

  We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

   

• Spare clothes/change of clothes

  Please pack spare clothes with a pair of socks and underwear to be placed in the front zip pocket of your child's school bag if they get muddy during recess and play time. 

• Please ensure that you are labelling all your child's belongings.
