Dear Families,

This week, we recognised R U OK? Day, when students wore a touch of yellow. This day is an important reminder to check in with the people around us and show that we care. Students participated in activities that explored kindness, friendship and the importance of asking someone, “Are you OK?” We discussed how listening, talking and seeking help from a trusted adult can make a positive difference when someone is having a difficult time.

It has also been fantastic to see the progress students have made socially, emotionally and academically. One example of this progress was evident during a recent sustained writing task. Students were asked to write a story based on a picture prompt and were encouraged to use their imagination, writing skills and knowledge of story structure to develop their ideas. All students were able to write for approximately 30 minutes, with many choosing to continue writing during the editing time to complete and improve their stories. Seeing the children remain focused, develop their ideas and take pride in completing their work demonstrates the wonderful growth they have made throughout the year so far.

The week ahead:

Religious Education: Next week we will be revising what we learnt over the term and consolidating learning about traditions, prayer and faith.

Writing:  Next week, students will begin looking at informative writing. We will discuss what informative writing is and how we use it. Students are going to be writing about Australian baby animals. 

Reading: Student will learn  another two ways to write the sound /yoo/. It can be represented by the letters u or ew. 

Mathematics:  We will examine different methods to measure objects and engage in hands on activities. 

Integrated Curriculum: Students will continue to create their own puppets and perform a show in a small group. 

Auslan:  Students will review their AUSLAN knowledge in Week 10

What you can do at home

• Listen to your child read regularly and encourage them to use their decoding strategies when they come to an unfamiliar word.

• After reading, ask your child to retell what happened, share their favourite part, or explain how a character was feeling.

• Re-reading familiar texts is a great way to build confidence, fluency and expression.

• Notice numbers in everyday places and ask questions like, “What do they know?”, “How do you know?” or "Are you sure?"

• A curious question to ask this week could be: What do you notice about the world around you?

Important Classroom Reminders:

• Fidget Toys

  We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. 

  Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. 

  We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

• Spare clothes/change of clothes

  Please pack spare clothes with a pair of socks and underwear to be placed in the front zip pocket of your child's school bag in case of a toileting accident or i they get muddy during recess and play time. 

• Please ensure that you are labelling all your child's belongings.
