Year 7 Cricket – State Champions
Mentone Girls’ Secondary College has made school history, capturing our first Year 7 State Cricket title since 1996. After dominating the Beachside Division in Term 1, the team narrowly progressed through the Southern Metropolitan Region finals due to some fine bowling from April C in the final over of the match against Rosebud Secondary College, securing promotion the state finals.
Across three knockout matches, the MGSC team displayed exceptional composure under pressure, disciplined bowling, and confident batting to secure the long-awaited championship. The journey began on Friday 21 November in the quarter final against Bass Coast College. MGSC delivered a commanding performance, restricting the opposition to just 23 runs. Pace bowler Minnie C produced one of the most memorable spells of the season, claiming six wickets for only six runs, including a brilliant hattrick that stunned the batting lineup, and comfortably defending their innings total of 3 for 101.
On Thursday 27 November, MGSC faced Melbourne Girls’ College in a tense semi-final. Melbourne set a total of 99, but MGSC’s batters responded with confidence and precision. Led by the reliable scoring of Laila D, Abi M, and Milla B, the team reached 7 for 102 with seven overs to spare, securing their place in the Grand Final later that day.
The Grand Final against Belmont High School was another showcase of discipline and calm execution. Belmont posted 7 for 89 in the T20 format, but MGSC once again chased efficiently. Finishing on 2 for 90—again with seven overs remaining—MGSC sealed the State title in emphatic style.
Throughout the tournament, the girls represented their school with pride, demonstrating resilience, teamwork, and exemplary sportsmanship. Their achievement marks a significant milestone for the school and sets a strong foundation for future cricket success. MGSC congratulates all players on their outstanding campaign.
