Principal's Message

Dear MGSC Community
As we come to the end of 2025, I pause to reflect on what has been an extraordinary year at Mentone Girls’ Secondary College. Our community has truly lived our values of inclusivity, creativity, empowerment and achievement, and our motto virtute et labore – “courage and work” - has guided us through challenges, successes and everything in between.
One of the defining moments of our year was the celebration of MGSC’s 70th birthday. More than 900 past students returned to the college to reconnect, reminisce and celebrate our shared history. Their presence - spanning many generations - was a powerful reminder that those who walk through our doors remain connected to this school long after they leave. It reinforced the enduring impact of an all-girls government school and the pride so many hold for MGSC.
Our students have continued to shine across all areas of school life. Whether through academic excellence, artistic expression, leadership, performances, sporting achievements or quiet acts of kindness, they have shaped a school environment that is vibrant, welcoming and inspiring. This year’s cocurricular involvement has been outstanding, with students participating in public speaking, mathematics competitions, snow sports, aerobics, dance and cultural study tours - each experience demonstrating their determination, teamwork and character.
A special mention goes to the artists featured in this year’s Making Waves magazine cover competition. Congratulations to:
• Sienna Prince (Year 10) – First place (front and back cover)
• Erin McClements (Year 12) – Second place (inside front cover)
• Gabby Kelly (Year 10) – Third place (inside back cover)
Their artwork beautifully captures the spirit of our school and its history, and we are proud to showcase their talent.
As the year closes, I extend my deep appreciation to the staff members who are finishing with us. Their service, commitment and connection to MGSC have contributed enormously to our programs, culture and student experience. We farewell:
- Bronte Vipond
- Justine Bowers
- Leah Liakos
- Martine McLeod
- Jaynen Yong
- Ayse Berk
- Thomas Lane
- Kathryn Tucker
- Anne Gamble
I also acknowledge two staff members who have been appointed to Principal positions:
- Detta Gordon (Assistant Principal) – newly appointed Principal of Edithvale Primary School.
- Lucille Burden (Learning Specialist) – newly appointed Principal at an international school in Hungary.
Thursday 11 December was VCE results day, and I extend my congratulations to the Class of 2025 on achieving their personal best. A special mention goes to our Dux, Ava Collins, who achieved an outstanding ATAR of 99.15. We look forward to welcoming Ava back next year to speak with our students.
To conclude the year, we invite all students to join us tomorrow for a whole-school picnic on the oval - a relaxed and joyful way for our community to come together before the summer break.
Thank you to our School Council, Parent & Friends Committee, families, staff and students for your support, energy and partnership throughout 2025. I wish you a safe and happy summer break and look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2026, as we enter our 71st year and continue to show the wider community the strength and impact of an all-girls government school.
Best wishes
Linda Brown
Principal
