The Age & Herald Sun Newspapers

A new Digital News Report undertaken by the University of Canberra, details how Australians access, engage with and trust the news.  A key finding of this report concludes that one in four people surveyed say that social media is their main source of news, overtaking online news websites.  This is why it is so very important for schools to offer a variety of traditional and trusted media sources in order for students to be accurately informed in today’s mass information age.

A print copy of each daily newspaper is located in the library for reading.  Both newspapers provide an Australian focused perspective, written and edited by professional journalists and used to provide insight into current local and global issues.

The library also subscribes to The Age online, which is available to be viewed at home, accessible through the Intranet by clicking onto The Age tile and entering a (single sign on) student compass password.  There was a total of 1,846 logins during 2025.

There is a new Chess Club in the library, held every Wednesday lunchtime.  If you don’t know how to play chess, then there is an opportunity here to learn ‘The Game of Kings’ from Dr Fehily.  Students are encouraged to register their interest by emailing Dr Fehily on 10871920@mgsc.vic.edu.au.

Book Club

During our last club for 2025, students discussed the two ‘modern classics’, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Fault in our Stars.  Both books share the common theme of ‘teenage coming-of age’, but the protagonists experience vastly different challenges and contrasting life experiences.  There was an interesting discussion about friendship and about how the students’ perspectives of different characters evolved after they had finished reading TPOBAW.

In 2026, the students new to MGSC are encouraged to come along and are welcome to drop in or they can email library@mgsc.vic.edu.au at any time with details of their name and class.
