A Spotlight on Learning in the  SLC on Heights Campus

It has been a very successful, but busy Term 2 for the SLC students. There have been many excursions and incursions, Winter Interschool Sport, lots of learning opportunities but the highlight has been our amazing Golden Valley Adventure Camp. 

Students were able to demonstrate our school values by collaborating with each other at the different activities, showing respect towards each other, with teachers and camp staff. Students demonstrated excellence by being the best person they could be in all situations and finally showing resilience when some of the activities made them feel a bit worried, but by pushing through and with encouragement from friends and teachers they challenged themselves to new experiences. 

In English, the SLC have been learning to summarise by determining the most important parts of the story or information texts, identifying the main idea, then using their own words to explain what happened in that text. We have used a variety of different texts to deepen the student’s understanding such as fiction, newspaper articles, information reports and persuasive texts. While celebrating Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week, we delved into Indigenous Texts so we can enhance our knowledge even deeper and understand their culture.

In Maths, we have learnt about addition and subtraction of fractions and provided lots of real-life learning through this concept. Once students understood the skill of solving the fraction addition and subtraction problems (which included like denominators, unlike denominators and mixed fractions), we then created real-life opportunities for them to apply this knowledge. Students needed to design pizzas with different toppings and then add or subtract number of pizzas slices. We also delved deeper into Probability and Location, which helped us when we were on camp, as we used the camp map to help us with directions and mapping using grid coordinates. 

Thank you also to Ms Hamzah who organised for the Carlton Football Club to come to our school and work with the SLC students in a program called Carlton Respects. They helped teach us about dealing with our emotions, gender equality - that girls and boys can equally play sport and be just as competitive as each other - healthy relationships and the prevention of violence against women. It was a very engaging session, where students were able to talk to each other, share their thoughts and learn new knowledge. 

Springvale Rise Primary School beanies have ARRIVED!!!! 

We are just getting into the coldest part of winter and with holidays starting next week, it is the perfect time for families to visit the Uniform Shop on Princes Highway in Noble Park and get yourself one of these warm and cosy SRPS beanies. Not only will they keep your head warm outside at recess and lunch, but you will also show respect for our school by wearing something that matches our uniform.

We have been lucky to have a variety of different lunch clubs to join in Term 2, which also means you can be inside nice and warm at lunchtimes. The wonderful Ms Beagley has been running Crochet Club and look at this beautiful flower made by one of our students. Some other clubs have been: interschool sport practice, girls soccer club, movie club and dance club. I wonder what we will see in Term 3. Thank you to all the wonderful teachers who give up their lunchtimes to work with students. 

Soccer World Cup: We are fortunate at Springvale Rise to have students from so many different cultures who enjoy and celebrate soccer. Students have been talking about and sharing their knowledge of soccer with the World Cup being played. Today - Friday - students selected their favourite team to support and dressed up in soccer jerseys to celebrate. We were also able to watch the Socceroos at school! Good luck to all the remaining teams in the World Cup- we can’t wait to see who wins!

Finally, we wish all our SRPS families a wonderful holiday. We hope you visit lots of places over the holidays, get outside for some fresh air, but most importantly stay safe with whatever you do, and stay safe when on devices and being on-line! 

NAIDOC Week will be celebrated during the holidays, and SRPS will continue their learning on this when we return in Term 3.
