Ethics in AI- A Conversation

The Human Edge of Artificial Intelligence
As part of our Franciscan Centre for Innovative and Ethical Leadership lecture series and the ongoing Our Human Edge campaign, we were privileged to host Ethics in AI: A Conversation Panel.
The intimate evening commenced with Jane Martens, Director of Information Technology and Innovation, who shared the outstanding work underway at Mount Alvernia College in preparing young people to engage thoughtfully, ethically and confidently with artificial intelligence. Jane's compelling presentation was complemented by a student panel Ava, Gemma, Stephanie and Jacinta, parent representative Zina Ansell, and moderator Mr Pasang Tenzing from our Faculty of Health and Science.
For many in attendance, it was truly a "from the mouths of babes" experience. Our students spoke with remarkable insight, balance and wisdom, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of the distinctly human qualities that will remain essential in an AI-enabled world: creativity, empathy, authenticity, judgement, and meaningful connection. Their confidence and depth of thinking captivated the audience and served as a powerful reminder of the exceptional young women we are privileged to educate at Mt A. Furthermore, it served as a powerful reminder of the uniqueness and groundedness of our Franciscan education.
Pope Leo XIV would no doubt take great encouragement from their example, but none more so than our own community, which feels immense pride in all they are becoming. My sincere thanks go to our student panellists and to Zina for their participation. Similarly, a huge thank you to Jane, Pasang and Alex Marron from our Marketing Team for their vision, preparation, and coordination of this inaugural event - which we hope will be the first of many important conversations in the years ahead! We hope to see many more from our community join us in this stimulating and engaging events!
