Giving Every Student a Voice with PechaKucha

How do you teach students to communicate clearly, think critically and engage an audience? One exciting way is through PechaKucha (pronounced peh-cha koo-cha).  The word “PechaKucha” is Japanese for “chit chat.” 

Developed in Tokyo, Japan, in 2003, PechaKucha is a simple but powerful presentation format. Students present 20 slides, with each slide automatically advancing after 20 seconds, creating a presentation that lasts just 400 seconds.  

The format encourages students to focus on the key message, use impactful visuals and present with confidence instead of reading from a screen. It helps them develop essential skills such as organisation, public speaking and audience engagement, while also encouraging creativity and critical thinking. 

At Overnewton, we believe every student has a voice worth hearing.  In most subjects across Middle and Senior School, students often have to complete a presentation for a formative or summative presentation.  PechaKucha provides a real opportunity for students to share their ideas, perspectives and learning in a way that is engaging and memorable. It also reflects our commitment to developing the communication, collaboration and critical thinking skills that are essential for success in the 21st century.
