Year 9 Art – Faces of the Elements

Article by Oksana Rubacha, Senior School Visual Arts

Last semester, our Year 9 Art students explored the Elements of Art through a creative project titled "Faces of the Elements." Students transformed a close-up portrait of their eyes by drawing inspiration from one of the four natural elements — fire, water, earth or air.

Throughout the unit, students investigated how artists use colour, line, texture, shape and value to communicate ideas and emotion. Rather than creating a realistic portrait, students experimented with visual language to capture the movement, energy and characteristics of their chosen element. From flowing ocean currents and swirling winds to cracked earth and blazing flames, each artwork became a unique interpretation of nature through the expressive use of the Elements of Art.

The final artworks showcase the creativity and imagination of our Year 9 students while demonstrating their growing confidence with a range of artistic materials and techniques. It has been wonderful to see students develop original ideas and discover how the Elements of Art can be used not only to create visually engaging artworks but also to communicate meaning.

As Paul Klee famously said, "Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible." Our students have certainly brought the power and beauty of the natural elements to life through their artwork.
