Year 2 Excursion to Birrarung Marr

Year 2 students had the opportunity to visit Birrarung Marr in Melbourne to learn first-hand about its history and the significance to First Nations people. Students were eager to begin exploring. It didn't take long for the excitement to take over, and the students had a fantastic day filled with learning and discovery. 

Throughout the excursion, students deepened their understanding of the rich history and culture of the First Nations Peoples, learning about the deep connection they have with the land and the Birrarung (Yarra River). They discovered how Aboriginal communities used the river and its surrounding environment as a source of food, fresh water, medicine, shelter and materials for making tools and everyday items. Students were fascinated to learn how every part of the natural environment was respected and used sustainably. 

As they explored Birrarung Marr, students compared the landscape of the past with the city we see today. They observed how the area has changed over time, discussing the impact of urban development and considering how the river and surrounding land continue to play an important role as places for recreation, community events and cultural connection. 

The excursion provided many opportunities for hands-on learning, thoughtful discussion and observation. Students asked insightful questions, worked collaboratively and demonstrated curiosity and respect throughout the day. It was a valuable experience that brought their classroom learning to life and helped them develop a greater appreciation for the history, culture and environment of our local area.
