Year 2

Learning at MEPS: What's Happening in Year 2

Year 2 has had a wonderful six weeks exploring their integrated unit, My Country Australia — and the students had a lot to say about it at assembly! Here's a taste of what they've been up to.

The Year Twos have been engrossed in learning about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander map, our Indigenous ancestors and their nations, and Australia's states and territories, including their floral emblems, flags, and the festivals we celebrate throughout the year. Next, students will deepen their connection to Country and bring their learning together by building double trioramas to display in their pod. 

Linked to the unit, students have been deep-diving into Are We There Yet? by Alison Lester — the story of a family's road trip around Australia, taking in Uluru, Kakadu, the Twelve Apostles, the Great Barrier Reef, Phillip Island and Sydney Harbour. It's a great window into just how big and varied our country is, and well worth adding to your family reading list!

Students have each chosen an Australian native animal to research, using their learning to write factual information texts. A fun fact from the classroom: platypuses have no teeth, and their fur glows a bright bluish-green under ultraviolet light!

Alongside multiplication and division, Year 2 has been learning about position and location — moving themselves and objects forwards, backwards, left and right, and practising quarter and half turns. As the students pointed out, these are handy skills for reading a road map, or parking a caravan!

It's been a busy and rich few weeks of learning — well done, Year 2!
