Clayfield College HPE Lessons

We are very fortunate at Clayfield College to have such a strong and well-established focus on swimming and lifesaving within our HPE curriculum. Unlike many school programs, our comprehensive approach combines structured skill development, water safety education, and quality instruction from experienced and passionate coaches. This ensures every student is given the opportunity to build confidence, competence, and a lifelong connection to the water.

 

This term, our instructors have worked closely with HPE staff to deliver engaging and purposeful swimming lessons for students from Pre-Prep to Year 2. These sessions focus on building strong foundations in the water, with students developing confidence, independence, and correct technique, while also learning vital lifesaving skills that are essential in the Australian way of life.

Students in Years 3 to 6 have also been challenged to extend their abilities, with a strong focus on lifesaving education. They have been developing important skills such as water safety awareness, basic rescues, and treading water, all while continuing to refine their swimming technique. It has been fantastic to see students grow in both confidence and capability throughout the term.

Next week marks our final week of school swimming for the term, with lessons resuming again in Term 4. We strongly encourage all Queensland students to continue swimming year-round. Consistent participation is key to maintaining and progressing skills, as long breaks can lead to a loss of confidence and technique. Year-round swimming also supports the development of strength, endurance, and overall fitness, while ensuring children are safe and capable in a variety of aquatic environments, including pools, beaches, and open water.

 

At Clayfield College, our swimming program offers a clear and continuous pathway- from learn-to-swim through to squad training -which is not always available within school-based programs. This allows students to remain in a familiar environment, continue building relationships with their coaches, and progress confidently at a level suited to their individual needs and goals.

Senior School Fitness Squad

At Clayfield College, we strongly encourage our senior students to continue swimming throughout Terms 2 and 3, not only to maintain their physical fitness, but also to support their mental wellbeing during a busy and often demanding time of the year.

 

Swimming is one of the most effective forms of low-impact, full-body exercise. It builds cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, and endurance, while also improving recovery and reducing the risk of injury, making it an ideal training option alongside other sports or study commitments.

 

Equally important are the mental health benefits. The rhythm of swimming, combined with controlled breathing, has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety levels, helping students to reset and refocus. During Terms 2 and 3, when academic pressure begins to build, particularly for our Year 11 and 12 students, regular swimming can play a key role in improving concentration, boosting mood, and supporting overall wellbeing.

 

Our new fitness squad sessions at Clayfield Swimming provide a structured yet supportive environment where students can train with purpose, maintain consistency, and enjoy the social connection of being part of a team. These sessions are designed to complement busy school schedules, offering students a healthy balance between study, sport, and self-care.

 

Continuing to swim throughout the cooler months ensures students return to the summer season feeling fit, confident, and prepared, both physically and mentally.

Time: 4:30pm - 5:30pm

Adult Squad

Clayfield Swimming offers coach-lead adult squad sessions, year-round. Whether you are competing in a triathlon or restarting your fitness journey, all levels are catered for.

 

  • Days: Monday/Wednesday/Friday
  • Time: 5:30am to 6:30am
  • Cost: $150 for 10 passes

Learn to Swim Holiday Intensive

Clayfield Swimming’s week-long intensive from 13 to 17 April, is designed to accelerate progression, build confidence, and help swimmers move up to the next level faster! 

 

Places are limited. Priority will be given to Clayfield College students at first instance. 

 

Cost: $100 for the week

Session Times: 

  • Level 1: 3:00pm to 3:30pm daily
  • Level 2: 3:30pm to 4:00pm daily
  • Level 3: 4:00pm to 4:30pm daily
  • Level 4: 4:30pm to 5:00pm daily
