1976 First Football Umpires Trained

Involvement in interschool sport with the EIS (Eastern Independent Schools) required umpires. Parents, staff and other supporters filled the role until in 1976 Mazenod took on the role of training student umpires. Under the watchful eye of Fr. McFall OMI, who brought 40 years of umpiring experience, and with the help of the AFL, they formed a squad of up-and-coming umpires. After 10 weeks of training followed by a written examination, students graduated as qualified Mazenod umpires.  This was an important move as Mazenod matured into interschool competition.
